We only need a about 2 to 3 TB of storage for the virtual servers after RAID (ideally RAID 5). Has anybody used the QNAP TS-509 Pro it can be used as a iSCSI target server, it also has dual gigabit NICs. Ive seen some very good reviews about this NAS. Any ideas? or is a custom Openfiler SAN better. As for Openfiler anyone running it on a HP ProLiant DL180 G5. Thanks

Hi For a SAN have a look at QNAP iSCSI Business NAS. I would suggest the QNAP TS-509 Pro or QNAP TS-809U if have a larger budget. What i would say is, if your going for ESXi make sure the hardware is ESXi compatible. I am also doing a similer project this summer and Ive opted for 2x Sun Fire X2200 M2 (2x Quad-Core AMD Opteron 2376 2.3 GHz and 8 GB) as they have 4 NICs each which will come in handy. I will be using a QNAP TS-509 Pro using 4 1TB hard drives in RAID 5 for the iSCSi storage. I will be using VMware ESXi as i am more familier and have had better luck with the Converter. Hope this helps.

Yep i am looking at the free solutions. Ive just been testing them and i like both. The only problem is the XenConverter its not been able to convert all of the Test servers. VMware vCenter Converter on the other hand has done them all with no problems. Nope no budget for a SAN yet but maybe in the in a year or two. What do you think for the hardware HP DL180 G6's or Sun Fire X2200 M2's. I am not sure if ESXi will work on the HP. However the SUN can according to the sales guy.

Hi all I am planning to virtualise our servers in the summer. We only have 7 servers but there all getting old, so planning to get 2 HP DL180 G6's. Storage will all be local RAID as we do not have the money for a SAN and backups will be manually exported to a NAS that we already have. I just can’t make my mid up which one to go for Citrix XenServer or VMware ESXi. Just wanted to know what people think of both of these products. From what I can see is that Citrix has a centralised management console plus live motion but do we really need it for 2 servers. Also what are conversion tools like for both of them. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorted the problem. I tried the latest Asus drivers but no luck. The onboard NIC was actualy a realtek NIC so got the latest drivers from there website and it works. Looks like Asus's drivers are also old as well.

Nope did not fix the problem, ill try the original manufactures website hopefully they got a fix/update.

I would suggest using Webmin, Virtualmin & Usermin and let the students do what they want.

yep that way does work as i have it configured for other computers . This system is my own so would prefer to be able to change the Static IP as need. This might just be a Bug,
-
Yep its set in general. Windows update is reporting an updated driver ill try updating and see what happens.

Hi, I Give the NIC a static IP and it works fine however when i restart the old Local Area Connection disappears and new one is detected with a new IP From the DHCP server. Every restart a new Local Area Connection is created currently is on 10 only when i assign a static IP. Whats strange is if i leave the IP as Automatic its fine on reboot. I am using Windows 7 RC Ultimate Edition 64bit. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow quite a response. I work for a private girl’s school and the management have insisted on this being implemented. However what I have done is links going to Webmail, Moodle and other external resources etc automatically open in a new tab. I thought this would be a good compromise as I my self am very heavy tab user. I haven’t had any problems with Google maps or any downloadable content. However site isn’t finished yet so still up for review.

yep, just rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess before activating and that should work fine know.

Hi, i would say use Webmin with Virtualmin and Usermin any Linux distro ie CentOS / Ubuntu Server. However it can be installed on windows so that's also an option. As free solutions its not bad.

Hello everyone, Just wanted to know what Joomla extensions you all use for Websites/Intranets. Thanks. I use: >JCE >JoomlaPack >IE 8 Compatibility >Camp26 Special Ajax RSS >No Right Click

We allow usb sticks but the stick is scanned automatically when its connected. I have got a few complaints about files being deleted by the AV. However better safe then sorry. I don't think you can really block usb sticks. Plus i would recommend you to disable auto run from GPO.

What software do you use to make your jobs easier?
Kamran7860 replied to itschad's topic in How do you do....it?
Spiceworks real time saver and its free. -
We use 3 different manufactures D-link/Panasonic/Intelligent, all very good but the main thing is the software you decide to use. The one we use is called Active WebCam it handles all the motions sensitive recordings once allocated space is reached its starts recording over older footage so for us its about 5 - 6 months. The Software is set as service so if the server restarts due to windows update its starts automatically. Hope this helps.
