We have Moodle 1.9 installed on our server and I've been trying to upload an ICT4Life Scorm package to the site and get it to work, but just get this error - Notice: Array to string conversion in MyMoodle:\Sandbox\lib\pear\HTML\QuickForm\Rule\Required.php on line 39 This Scorm package was compiled by Ian Hollows at Pearson and he says he cab get it to install on their Moodle site. Has anyone succeeded in getting this to work? Can someone put me straight about the error message?

Uniservity is the "VLE" of choice for our LEA, and I believe all the primary schools are going down this route. It's a different picture when it comes to secondary schools though and part of the blame for this must lie with the LEA for not getting round to this earlier. Some heads, teachers and technicians saw the BECTA requirements several years ago and started making plans for the future then, so we have a mish mash of VLE's from the commercial to OS. Getting teachers to change VLE two or three years down the line will be difficult, after all, 18 months isn't regarded as a long lead in time for introducing a VLE. I'm spending some time this summer going through as much managing technological change literature as possible. Our head rejected Uniservity despite the offer from the LEA to fund this for an initial three years, and decided to go down the Moodle route. This may change in three or four years time when we come under the wing of a managed service, but who knows what the future will bring?

The last vacancy I saw for a position such as this was SO1 and up, and it was solely to work with the VLE, no day to day tech involvement at all. These types of jobs are much more than managing the backend of a VLE, you have to get inside curriculum matters, pedagogy and the like. It's much more than teachers putting Powerpoint presentations online, despite what the rep from Uniservity said.

Will you be going down the Uniservity route then?

Aren't you using Moodle Zak? Create a course called "Briefing" or something, add the staff, then create a group (staff) from these members, add the staff and bulk email them. Give a couple of people admin or course editing teachers rights to this course so that they can add items.

It didn't go. Next week, the final week before the holidays, has been designated as Olympic Activities Week. There'll be no end of term meeting/talk to staff. I'm relieved in a way as my degree course and getting a VLE up and running is taking all my time. There are the bare bones of a talk in place, and I could extemporize for 5 minutes, but not 20. Perhaps next term... Once again, thanks for all the advice.

Have to agree with 'Red' marco84 here. You're effectively handing in your notice if you don't accept the TUPE process. No ifs, no buts.

They already do this for teachers. Can I second this? The government budgets for X amount of disability benefit to be paid out a year. Very rarely is all this money paid out. They will tell us how much benefits are costing us a year, but not the fact that they've budgeted for more than this to be paid out. We all pay taxes in order to provide society with the things we can't afford as individuals. The government of the day decides how this should be divided up; in your case they say they estimate there are X number of people deserving of disability benefit and calculate the amount they need to put aside to pay for it. Your pride in standing on your own two feet (pardon any unintended insult here) is working against you. If you claim what you deserve are you going to pack in your job and spend every lunchtime in the pub 'wasting' taxpayers money, or are you going to carry on working (and paying taxes) and contribute usefully to society?

There's no law against drinking at home, or for a parent or any other adult to offer a child alcohol. There's something I can't quite bring to mind regarding being asked by someone under the legal drinking age to go into a shop and buy some alcohol for them, which I think comes under being complicit in an illegal act, and just giving away a drink to a youngster, which may be morally wrong, especially if the child is not yours, but is not illegal, as then any parent in the scenario above would be guilty.

It's a little easier to get out of the winning bidder's recommended VLE than it is managed services. If you (oh, ok, you and the head) decide that what is on offer is not what you want, then just say no. The downside to this is that most of the LEA may be going with the managed services VLE, economies of scale and all that, 14-19 Diploma coordination plus a whole bagfull of other stuff.

Falling school rolls are a nationwide problem due to a fall in the number of births. Of course there are "hotspots" where this trend is not the case, but overall this is what's happening. Naturally this leads to school closures and consolidation. Another factor to weigh in the balance is that funding follows the pupil, so each school is fighting for a diminishing share of the cake.
