I can answer this!! The online safety act has a provision inthat Ofcom can go to court, if the end site refuses to play ball, and require (by law) that the ISPs block the site - saying no is not an option then.

I am working on the assumption that any communication path that an ISP can't access to block would come under any rules they are looking at.

At the moment, the government doesn't seem to be making a distinction.

Hi all, for those of you who don;t know me (probably most of you!!) I amd DOS_Box's brother and work for a Fibre AltNet/ISP. Currently the governement is looking to get feedback on the online safety act, and further regulation that ight hit ISPs. One of the parts they are after feedback on is the use of VPNs, and the potentail to ban VPNs based on age - bascically ban children from using them. So, I thought I'd ask the techie community here around the usage of VPNs to access scholl learning resrouces etc. If you could let me know if and how your particular establishment uses VPNs for students, I can collate this, and it will help ISPA (our trade body) formulate a response back to governemnt. We have a course that has end of module quizzes, and want to produce a certificate at the end of the course, that shows the modules and the marks for each one. I can see how to add a certificate to a single quiz, but not how to link it to multiple quizzes? I've tried google, but my Foo is weak. Can anyone help/point me at a solution?

I have recently bought a HDD based recorder, and it used removable hard disks to transfer files from the recorder to a PC (it's an old Mackie SDR system I bought 2nd hand). It uses a PATA HDD caddy system, but in order to connect the HDD to my PC, or laptop, I need to remove the HD from the caddy and remount it into another caddy, and connect via USB. Does anyone know of a system which has an internal 5.25" drive bay, hot swap disks and then a matching external disk box to plug it back into? I am confident that I can use PATA to SATA converters, but I've had no luck in finding such a system. It either doesn't exist, or my Google Foo is weak :-(. Thanks

Are you dead set on the IP route? I installed a PVR and traditional camera setup for my daughter last year. The only downside would be that you would need to use camera cable, rather than cat5/6. A lot more choice, and the PVRs are network/web accessible as well.

My old Salomons gave up the ghost after around 15 years of walking So last year I treated myself to a new pair - funnily enough I went for North Face, can't remember the model name off hand, but they were the range up from the Hedgehogs. Did a lot of all weather walking in them last year (inc Scafell Pike, Helvelyn, Blencathra), and they were great every time. can't comment on longevity yet, as it's early days, but initial impressions are very good.

I wasn't so sure. You'd still need the PoE devices and cabling, and the range is dependent on the antenna, according to their website. Also the whole shooting match would have cost twice as much, for virtually the same work. I'm nothing if not tight! :-)

OK, job jobbed! After a bit of cable running, and jiggery pokery I have a working system!! One edimax access point in the roof space of the stable, with one of the antennas connected to an external Yagi: Pointed back at the house (you can just see the white guttering on the bungalow, behind he neighbors wall!!): PoE switch connected to the DVR CCTV recorder, 50m cable run to the Edimax (PoE powered). At the house end there is a PoE injector, and the same Edimax access point in the roof space, connected to the same Yagi antenna. After a bit of a learning curve on the setup of the Edimax's it all works!! I think it's pretty close to the limit of the system, but we have real time video camera feed from the stable block! Not bad for my first attempt at a remote wifi system!

One of our customers has changed their email domain name, and we have hundreds of contacts that need updating. Is there anyway in Outlook (or exchange) to replace the domain name of an email address?

Bits ordered, went for a PoE injector at the house end, saved a bit of money, and already had a PoE switch for the stable end. Total cost of bits £112. I'll report back with how it goes!!

Latest thoughts!! Having done a bit of digging, and looking at locations for power, as well as where external aerials might be mounted, I have come up with a cunning (to me at least:-)) plan: At the house end: PoE switch attached to ADSL router; ethernet into attic, and a PoE Wireless access point inthe attic, with a Yagi directional antenna moutned on the gable end, pointed at the stable block. Stable Block end (bearing in mind nearest power is 4 stables away!) same setup, PoE switch, DVR into switch, PoE Wireless access point and Yagi antenna pointed back at house. I think this will work well, and avoids having to run more mains power where there currently isn't any!! Please feel free to pick holes in this!

Some good ideas here. I thought of the powerline one, but the house and the stables are on separate feeds. As you've probably guess there is zero budget!! So I might try the WG602s first, and see how we go, although weather proofing might prove interesting!

This is an interesting one, and I want to pick people's brains who have done this. My daughter has just taken on a stable yard, and I've installed networkable DVR's. There are 2 DVRs in disparate buildings. One in the main house, and one in a stable block approx 100m away, around a walled corner. Between the house and the stable block is concrete, right up to the wall, so running cable is tricky/expensive (esp for protective trunking). She has a normal home wifi network, and I want to join the 2 buildings together. I need suggestions for good kit, for an outdoor bridge system. Thanks in advance, for any help.
