  1. Very helpful comments there guys. What connectivity does it have? USB? Does it charge via USB? Standard headphone socket?
  2. Doesn't seem too bad. Anyone know of an OS mapping app, like Memory Map, that runs on the G1?
  3. What's the GPS like though? I've read reports that it's hopeless, can't sync with the constellation, etc. Average battery life is..???
  4. I used to have one of those!!!
  5. So, for those who have one, how does the G1 feel? How about battery life? GPS? Any loves or hates about the G1?
  6. Tech support, complaints and customer service are all ignoring my emails and calls now. The ADSL is down and has been since Sunday evening. Not best pleased right now!
  7. Interesting thought. What hardware would enable me to do that?
  8. Hi everyone I'm hoping the Plusnet service will be a good and reliable stop-gap, albeit only at 8 meg. The cable run for the other line is on the same multi-pair so, yes, it will be interesting to see what happens when Plus goes live. O2 isn't available on my exchange, not the 20 meg service anyway :-( The standard service is expensive for what it is even with the customer discount. It does seem that the only max service option I have is Sky! We seem to be in tin-can + string country here. Well, the Bulldog service is still off and I've just sent them a string of blistering emails, little good that it'll do I'm sure. The Plusnet service should be live at the weekend and then I have until 20th May to wait for BT to take over the Bulldog LLU line. After that I'll see what service to go for at that time. Or maybe I'll manage with the Plus service until O2 is available (March '10?)
  9. It doesn't, at least not by itself. It's still off now. I have to ring tech support and complain that the fault still presents, they pass that along to the engineers and sometime later (maybe) it reconnects. Been off now since 9 last night! I'm not holding my breath. BT will have the line back on 20th May and then I'll order a new service; don't fancy Sky as I'd prefer something with freephone or local rate tech support calls.
  10. It is really strange. I wouldn't say it's to the minute at 9pm but close enough. It either becomes intermittent and then bombs out or it just bombs. It happened yesterday; perfect all day, smooth as silk. Come 9pm - bang, off it went.
  11. The service is on an LLU line. I've just got off the phone with BT after arranging for BT to take the line over. Once BT have it back then I'll find a new ADSL provider. In the meantime I've ordered Plusnet Unlimited 8Mb on another line as a stop-gap, that's due to go live on the 9th. Barstewards!!!!!
  12. Exchange is Worcester St Peters Losing sync totally at 9pm. The router says there's no interface, it's as though there's no DSL service on the line. DSL lamp flashes continually. There are no environmental changes that could logically cause this that I know of. Yes, it is doing my head in!!! ;-)
  13. I intend to jump just as soon as I can find someone to take over. BE don't cover my area and O2 isn't an option.
  14. Well, it's still offline! I rang tech support again this morning, the trained monkey who answered the call couldn't even engage in a civil conversation! I insisted on speaking to a supervisor, at which point they cut me off!!! Spending today deciding who to switch to, trouble is I need unlimited downloads, a static IP along with, preferably a 16 meg service and noone seems to do this. I'll have a hunt around. Not in a good mood right now!
  15. I have actually ordered a cheap and cheerful service from Plusnet on a second line as a backup but that's still a week away from going live :-( I would have chosen BE but they're not available in my area. I'll probably migrate the bulldog line to someone else in due course but not sure who with yet.
  16. At the home office I have a Bulldog 16 meg ADSL connection, I've had it for three years or so and it's been relatively trouble free all that time. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a dramatic drop in DL speed, it was running around 2 meg. I reported the fault and it was fixed, speeds were back to the normal 12 - 14 meg that I've always had. Just over a week ago the connection bombed out completely so another call to taiwan or wherever the hell their, now rubbish, tech support is based. When they had UK call centres it was good but since Pipex took them over it's been the pits, however, until now it didn't really impinge on me because it's been trouble free..... anyway, back to the plot... It has been nothing but trouble ever since, broadly it goes like this..- Every evening at 9pm, almost to the second the connection either becomes intermittent or drops completely; if it's intermittent it lasts about an hour and then drops out totally, no DSL interface at all according to the router diags. It's then off all night. Next morning I phone support and after half an hour I get through to some drone who reads from a script - it's impossible to get to speak to an actual Cable and Wireless techie (C&W actually provide the service). They tell me it's been fixed, I tell them no it hasn't. They log another fault and some time later (varying between an hour and several hours) the connection reboots only to repeat the cycle all over again that evening. Oh yes, tech support lines are only open 8 - 6 so I can't phone overnight I can never get a reason for the fault either. It's off now, I'm connecting right now via my phone as an internet sharing device. I am at my wits end over this. Why does the connection drop at 9pm every night? Why can't C&W actually fix this problem? Has anyone else ever experienced something like this? Can anyone offer any possible reason for this behaviour? If it was a more random issue I'd say it was a line fault but support say the line tests OK and when the connection is up it's fine, fast and rock solid....... until 9pm. Infuriating. Any thoughts?
  17. Why on earth did I write HP?! It's a Canon iP4200 of course, sorry about that. Maybe someone from CP could PM me a price for a full set of inks for the ... ahem... Canon ip4200? Thanks for all the helpful replies.
  18. Can anyone recommend, from personal experience, a low cost but decent quality supplier of ink cartridges? I've rescued a surplus HP i4200 to use at home which is in good condition but needs ink. I've found sites offering compatibles at around half genuine price but a) is the ink any good and b) are the suppliers trustworthy and do they give good service? Any suggestions will be welcome.
  19. We found the cause, but not a solution yet. It seems that it is indeed the database client software that's causing the issue. We uninstalled it from one machine and office docs reverted to behaving properly. Tech support for the database have no idea at this stage but have promised us they'll look into it. In the meantime the users will have to live with the issue, it's not so bad because opening documents directly from an Office app is fine, it's only double clicking a file within Explorer that produces the error. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  20. Good ideas there. I'm onsite tomorrow so I'll have a look with these tools. Thanks
  21. I'm semi-convinced it's a DDE issue. When opening a document by double clicking in explorer a DDE link has to be set up and the correct application with which to open the document has to be determined; when opening from within Word the application is obviously already known so the DDE link is pre-determined. I don't know enough about the mechanics of DDE though to investigate further. My level of suspicion is increased by the fact that the affected machines all run a bespoke database client that presumably also uses DDE and maybe this is interfering with the Office DDE process? I need to remove a client to see if the Office problem then also disappears but finding time to do this when the machine is in almost constant use is a problem.
  22. Not a symantec issue. All our machines are protected by Sophos and this issue only affects a limited number of machines. We may yet be forced into a rebuild of the affected machines but finding a reason first, even if not a solveable reason would be good. No, all drive mappings are current and are used. The problem only manifests itself when a document is opened by browsing to it in explorer or My Computer and double-clicking it. If Word or Excel is opened first and the same document opened via File > Open then there's no issue, both the app and the document open instantly. It also only happens with Word and Excel docs, powerpoint is unaffected. Thanks for the suggestions, all are welcome.
  23. I previously posted this in the office forum but got no replies. I'm now reposting in the Windows forum just in case anyone here has a different slant on it. Win XP Pro workstations (1 x PC + 1 x laptop), fully patched on a 2007 network. If MS Office 2003 Word or Excel files are double-clicked from within explorer or My Computer both the app and the document take almost a minute to open. If, however, the app is opened from the start menu and then the same doc is opened from file > open then both open instantly. I have tried several things to try and alleviate this problem such as: 1) editing the file > open settings from the tools > file options of My Computer. I've removed the DDE linkage which in some cases solves the problem but in other cases just gives rise to other errors such as file permissin errors. 2) I've edited out the data and options registry keys for word, this results in the first attempt to open a document working instantly but on all subsequent attempts the problem re-occurs. 3) I cleared out all temp files, etc. 4) I did a system restore back to a point before the first occurrence of the problem. Nothing works The problem only occurs on these two PC's (out of several hundred) and there's no common ground that might lead me to an explanation. Has anyone had any experience of this? Anyone found a resolution?
  24. We have a HP 6710b laptop running Vista Business. It runs OK except that it will randomly freeze for up to a minute at a time before unfreezing and running normally. This will recur frequently (several times a day) but randomly. It's so bad that the user has chucked it back at us and told us to buy something that works! We've run the rule over it and can find nothing wrong. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any ideas on a resolution?
  25. I'm looking at an iPhone, but on PAYG. Contracts are so expensive now! £390 for the phone on PAYG and a single £10 top-up gives 12 months free unlimited data. Not a bad deal I think. The only downside is no VVM on PAYG but I have all my VMs converted to text and email anyway.
