Well, I've had mine for three days now, and in all seriousness, I'm strongly considering sending it back. It just doesn't seem to be able to hack any sort of workload. i have IE running with two tabs, bluetooth and wifi on, and the unit on mains, and i find that it 'sticks' randomly (hangs - unresponsive to screen taps, for anything up to 20 secs) when asked to do even basic thing like play a youtube video (with music in the vid that i can listen to, and therefore switch tabs). i have uninstalled non essential software (ie. the Millennium rotation app - couldn't even get an BT audio stream to stabilse with that running), which has made it a bit more responsive, and disabling BT can help a bit too. The battery life is pitifull, and i feel cheated by the absence of the 3g modem, despite the advertisement of a sim card slot - its just madness...the statement of the sim card slot is completely irrelevant in its current config. You might think i'm a bit harsh on it given that its a tablet netbook. However, i also own a Lenovo S10-3T Netvertible, with the same spec and it runs much smoother. fair enough, the s10 has an 8 cell battery, but it doesn't start blowing bubbles the minute i try and push it. Perhaps a phone call to my account mgr at RM on Monday to send it back. I'll just wait for the HP Slate to make its entrance in the UK.

OK, so my slate arrived just after 2pm today. Since Dos_Box was exceptionally kind enough to potentially sacrifice his slate and crack open it and show us the creamy gooiness inside, I thought I'd stand shoulder to shoulder with him, and go the stage further by having a peek at what is beyond the EM shield. Before I continue, this RM Slate is an odd beast. The 3G connectivity, for me, would have been the ace in the hole for me. The O/S image even suggests that it is ready and should have the capability to go 3G... Registry settings Software And this is right outta the box. So, without further a doo, here's whats behind the 'iron curtain'... The board The SSD (soz about teh fuzziness, the macro function was warming up ) The Broadcom Crystal HD Card (The BT card is adjacent the fan. dunno where the wlan card is!) The empty Mini PCI-e(?) slot The back side of the EM shield So, a bit of a disappointment on teh 3G front, but I'm sure we can get a card for it somewhere, right? *** No RM Slate's were *seriously* harmed in the making of this post.

Moving Servers To Different Hardware
jpaterson replied to farquea's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Yeah, but you need a key to use the Recovery Disc and Bare metal restore feature. You don;t get a key with the Trial. I suppose £1100 isn;t that expensive for disaster recovery or a migration solution ;-) -
Moving Servers To Different Hardware
jpaterson replied to farquea's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Dunno if you had any joy with this, but I've used Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to migrate a server hardware platform (Restore to dissimilar hardware). Bloody expensive, but it works a treat, and takes a lot of teh hassle out of intricacies of migration. -
It's quiet here. pupils and teachers are on the wind down (We break up a week today), so demands are fairly low. Perhaps I can get a shot at configuring this IAS I've been meaning to do for ages!

Does it have a hardware button to bring up the OSK?

ur the man dos_box. we'll done. i ordered mine on Friday. looking forward to it getting here. In the other Slate thread, you mentioned that it did not have a BIOS. I'd imagine you've already had a go at this, but if not, have you tried plugging in a usb keyboard and molesting the usual function keys?

Thanks for the update Dos_Box. With regards to teh Win7 finger interface, try increasing the screen DPI. It helped heaps on my Lenovo S10-3T, You'll need to have a few goes at it to find the right balance between size and real estate.

ICT For Education Magazine. I Get 'Ranty' Again
jpaterson replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
10 outta 10 mate! -
Thanks Dos_Box, First one is, initially, does there look to be any software / drivers to run /operate the Sim Card slot for 3G? Next, does teh unit look like it is upgradeable? For example, access hatches for RAM or battery, or perhaps screws to take the rear cover off? What are you planning on using yours for? Thats it mate. thanks!

I was at the point of clicking 'buy' on the RM Store, but I really wanna hold out for an HP slate 500. As yet still no news on when they'll be in the UK. I know you'll be doing a review in a few days, but can I ping a few questions to you on the RM Slate. They'll be (I hope) easy questions.... Jay

The specs on the HP Slate 500 look pretty good for a netbook platform tablet. But can't get any info on a release date for the UK. Does anybody have any gen on it? Was considering the RM Slate 100 as an alt til it comes out, but I'd rather not buy twice. TIA folks.

Just me... 5 Servers (inc 2 DC's) 260 Workstations Just under 700 users in AD 38 hrs/week

Awwww, come on... at least give it a bash. Gotta start somewhere ;-)

Remember folks, it doesn't have to be done in an single session, you can spread the activities throughout teh day. However, you can't double up. If you do 70 press-ups in one day, you still have to 50 the next, same for sits. Xmas day is optional, although encouraged. If you have health complications, halve the targets.

Anything by the TTS Group (ProBotix, Easyview, Log Box, etc). Cheap a$$ crap, often comes with unsigned drivers for teh hardware making it a nightmare to depoly automatically. DOes my head right in!

Thats the very one my friend. With no joy :-(

Bump! I would also like some assistance with this. Followed the Smoothwall (AF2008) help documentation to the letter - still failed miserably

Should know but don't how to untangle shared IE8 settings
jpaterson replied to speckytecky's topic in Windows Server 2008
I'm not 100% on what your problem is. Any chance you could clarify? -
No USB 3.0? for $8000, I'd want all the mod-cons!
