At Smoothwall we have hired a fair few techies. I find the qualification "has worked in a school" usually means you have found someone hard working, resourceful and resilient. I'd take them over someone with a ream of qualifications any day of the week.

Agree that WPAD isnt a risk on a trusted LAN, but the thinking goes that WPAD is a risk if your device sniffs for wpads on untrusted LANs - that's why in general browser folks are stopping support. It is the sort of thing I wouldnt rely on hanging around, working reliably or getting bugfixed is all.

No, you should already have the licence

I would avoid doing this if I could - but if you have to, push the pac file via AD, and (it's a while since I have done this) as long as the pac file is unavailable, the browser will go direct. Your other option is to produce a PAC that recognises your network by IP range. WPAD is definitely something that's going away for security reasons. Ideally, you'd put a filter client on staff laptops, so they could be filtered wherever. If you are a Smoothwall user, I can help you get started with that. If not, we could probably work something out for your staff.

If you can stretch to 25 - I enjoyed "Unstable"

Proxies are increasingly difficult to support - particularly on locked down devices like iPads. You have more and more cert pinning, and newer protocols like HTTP3 making life harder and harder for a proxy. I'm not saying they'll go away short term - certainly it's still alive and kicking at the edge of a network, but on-device... tricky. We have a range of technologies here at Qoria (smoothwall's parent company) - I reckon we will have proxies on ipad for the parental control product for a while, but on a school product, likely a blended approach.

We use those apple APIs - but in a limited way, as there's no reporting data available from them. Any other solution will be using a MiTM proxy in the background, and is likely to have a short shelf life.

With 1:1 tho you have it slightly easier as you can push the username from the MDM, and not worry about SSOing them to Google or Azure

This surprises me - Smoothwall Monitor isn't the country's most popular monitoring tool for no reason. Would love to get some of your feedback if you have time?

It's a tricky one - you are best using shared iPad mode - so folks have to put in a pin or similar to get into the ipad. Otherwise anything you do to login might "hang around" and someone else picks it up.

If you would like to play with the Smoothwall Monitor product, please shout. I can guarantee it will blow the socks off your DSLs, and we can get it deployed pretty sharpish.

Just for clarity - there's longer retention by default on our monitor product, and filter users can choose to hold all data for longer, or to archive and store that data themselves. Of course all safeguarding data (real problems) should be in your Record Manager product.

Have you considered using an agent on the chromebook to do the filtering? If you're a smoothwall customer that's a free add on, this may be the case with some other filters Then you have filtering wherever the chromebook is on whatever network

It's our fork of firefox - so it does all the filtering in-browser and doesnt need any certs or network fun. Apple are legally required to behave with 3rd party browsers - and Firefox (like everything else on IOS) is backed by the same underlying browser engine.
