New Feature - EduGeek Outlet
acer-man replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
Not going to lie to you all Acer will not ship parts to you, sorry if that is a problem. However they will turn around problems much quicker than they did a year ago. If any one has problems or bad stories to tell please e-mail me them. I will gather all your complaints then pass them to Acer with my opinions! Acer are aware of us and both the the head of the service centre and the manager of repairs are in my contacts list. I will not have schools suffer due to bad service and if needs be I will take the case myself to get this sorted. I am sorry that you have experianced problems but I will not let that happen to any of my customers. If you buy PCs or Laptops off us and are not happy with them I will buy them back, that is how certian I am that Acer can supply what you need. (Boring bit: This is subject all the normal T&Cs etc.. please contact me for details) I am Acer Man, let me be your answer to problem free IT! Richard -
EduGeek Outlet is open to both personal and business use. In the vouchers sections you will find vouchers specific to personal use. Haggle away!

Please consider EduGeek Outlet. Thanks

Sorry! I'll tell them. Then it is a BIOS upgrade which is dependant on Motherboard manufacturer. Please leave it with me and I will get back to you when I have an answer.
-
Just spoke to Steljes and they said it is a known problem with some PCs of which the M464 is one of them, Dell is another manufacturer with the same problem. Solution is a BIOS upgrade or firmware upgrade from Steljes: SMART Technologies, industry leader in interactive whiteboard technology, the SMART Board Download the latest firmware for the board version 4.4 and the problem (according to Steljes) is gone. Hope that helps.

Nove T4 has totally seperate rights to SIMS but both your LEA and system admin should have full access, both using the admin logon, but I guess you have tried that. What are you trying to do in T4 most things can now be done in T6 or SIM.net. If you need any help I may be able, call me if you need to 0871 464 0871.

I have just phoned the technical manger at Steljes (Smartboard suppliers) and Acer Desktops manger. As you would expect both their mobiles went to voicemail but when they get back to me I will post any information I find on here.
-
Sounds like we all agree that a powered USB hub will solve the problem, so anyone buying one for use with a Smart board can have a powered USB hub for 10p! Sound fair?
-
Update: Just asked our senior engineer and he confirms your findings: When pluging in to serial everything works fine but when plugging into a USB then it does hang. Two solutions are plug in Smartboard after boot up or plug smartboard into powered USB hub. Don't like problems so I will speak to the Acer Desktops Manager for Acer UK and tell him about the problem. Thanks

Sorry to hear that was it the same model as I have been using these in schools without complaint? Is it just one PC or do you have several with the same problem? If you would like to demo one as a test I could arrange to get a demo unit sent to you, or we could swap the model you have and both test each others. Acer Outlet is determined to solve problems customers have and I would not want you to have kit you are not happy with. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for that document.

Thanks to tmcd35. I wrote that message while watching Bob the Builder with my Son, so my mind was maybe not fully on what I was writing! I had forgotten about select agreements this morning but you are correct, I am unsure if an OEM licence will give you downgrade rights under the select agreement?
-
Isn't this the longest word in the English language? Good word but not a nice illness to get!
-
As mentioned all PCs and Laptops (except netbooks) have to come with Vista now and as you said you can downgrade. However the ability to downgrade was suppose to stop at the start of this year with support finishing during this year. You can never trust microsoft! From personal experiance installing in schools over the last few months lots of schools are now moving to Vista but some of these schools have done total replacements and thus changed the whole school. I agree if you change some of the PCs and then have a Vista/XP mix you may well have trouble with the children. If you move to Server 2008 (which is much improved on 2003) then Vista is the best way forward. Although this doesn't affect schools as much of all the repairs we do about 70% are virus repairs and to date none have been Vista, all XP. I would move to Vista but leave Windows 7 until SP1 comes out for it, thats when Vista started to work! Hope that helps.

My school infrastucture - whats wrong with this picture?
acer-man replied to gman's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Not sure if it would help but when I was at the school we replaced all the switches with Netgear Managed swiches with 1Gig backbone, this made a big difference to the speed but only if as SYNACK says the servers have 1Gig connection. With the price of switches now it may be worth while move to 1Gig throughout but I would expect the PCs will not take advantage (ie not 1Gig card). However all new PCs would have a 1Gig card. Finally are the wireless rooms next to each other? Do they have 1 or 2 Access Points? Could these be conflicting and causing problems? Hope that helps.- 16 replies
