  1. thanks, We are not really looking at the 1:1 basis at the moment(and we probably won't) as we have nearly 2500 students it starts to get expensive. But it might be interesting to go the conference and see how they manage all the devices and they are being used
  2. thanks, do you know the name of the school?
  3. Thanks for the info. The blog is great. I would still like to go out and visit some schools that have been using iPads on a daily basis for nearly 1 year or more to see how they find them and how they use them on a daily basis. Our LT Team are very happy with there iPads and we have given them to our ICT department and they seem to be using them quite effectively. We have one that has been out on loan to various departments and they have expressed an interest in get some (waiting on new budgets etc.) so the demand for them is there its just seeing them in a school environment that would be useful. I did think about trying to get in touch with essa academy in Bolton to see how they are getting on and how they use them. (Just not got round to it as of yet)
  4. Hi I am looking to try and find out how secondary schools in either Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire are using iPads. We have just given some of our teachers iPads and a lot of our staff are bring in there own. But are not really sure what to do with them or how best to use them during a lesson to engage the students. So what I have been trying to find out is if there are any schools in our local area that are actually using them on a day to day basis and if they have been using them for a while. Meeting up with somebody and seeing them being used in day to day environment. We are looking into the possibility of giving out iPads to faculties/students but nobody can really say what they want them for all they say is can we have an iPad. We are only looking at iPads as we have tested other tablets and we have found them to be far better for us. Chris Draper Ashfield School Kirkby-in-Ashfield Nottinghamshire
  5. Thanks I will defiantly give this a try. However I might sound totally and utterly thick now so I apologies for this but how are you giving staff/students AFP home drives with there AD log-ins? have you un-ticked the use UNC option? and how have you pointed them to the xserve? sorry about this but i have inherited this from somebody else and they haven't left me with any instructions or anything?
  6. like i said unfortunately that is not possible in our environment. We have 2500 students plus another 200 members of staff all sharing 4 terabytes worth of storage we just can't up all 40 or so student accounts to the required storage capacity that is required for aperture and stuff. We need a script that maps there current Mac home folder on the promise storage server we have to there AD account on there desktop (mac only) and if they don't have a home folder on the array then it creates one on log in.
  7. So are you are using there AD login or have you setup an OD account for them? Can you send me the details of how you have done this so I can have a look to see if would work for us?
  8. Thanks for the idea but it won't really work in our environment as we mainly use aperture and the average aperture library is about 20GB. Our promise storage array is about 12tb so that's why we want to use that.
  9. Has anybody managed to find a way of using both AFP home folders and SMB folders? What I am trying to do is have both setup on a students/staff login so that they can access there windows based home directory and also access the Mac home directories for things like Aperture, iphoto garage band etc which require a lot of storage room. We Limit Student storage to 150mb so we need to be able to use our current promise storage to store the home folders. I have read a few forums with scripts on but i can't seem to get them to work. I have got a working magic (golden) Triangle I can login to the any Mac with the any AD login and it works I can see there windows based home folder. Any Help would be much appreciated. Our Current setup is: Mac OS X Server (xServe) 10.7.5 running OD as Master and bound to AD Mac Clients 10.7.5 Windows 2008R2 Domain Controller
  10. Has anyone come across an error with smart aware software where it gives the following error message: SMART Aware "This document is not available because no document is open" this only appears the first time you open Word. Also it only appears for anybody who is a non admin. We have tried reinstalling the driver from both the disk and the lastest one on the web, we have also tried giving everyone full control of the smart directory in program files. We are running windows XP SP3 and Office 2007 on the machine in question. If anybody could help it would be much appreciated as i am getting so annyoed with this problem now. Thanks Chris Draper Ashfield School Notts.

    Repair Permissions

Thanks for the tip, This worked brillently. We had an issue where it was saying that the users where already logged in when nobody was and if we turned on simontanious log on our students could log in but as soon as we turned it off nothing. used passenger to reset the permissons on the home folders and then the users could log straight in. That has saved me a huge head ache and a reinstall of OS X server. Thanks Chris Draper
