We have ours setup with SSO using Microsoft 365, it works really well and pushes through the UPN so most of the time they don’t even see a login page

We have one VLAN with no MITM certificate - if it is installed under this then it runs with SSL interception when moved back to the staff laptops VLAN. If installed with interception then it needs interception disabled when running, so TLDR install it with no interception and it will run with interception...

Out of curiosity - are these the metal entry panels? Is it a grounding issue?

Could you use hot glue (as fairly easily removed with some time) and some acrylic with holes to sit on the top, use a pen or thin designed key if you ever needed them?

Thanks. Nothing was redirected before and nothing in the local profile which is what’s baffling. Even checked the registry keys. This site has only just got a gig line, some staff in rural areas, debate over Microsoft vs Google school so usually is the route I’d go down but going down the local route just seemed a better fit

Hi all, Bit stumped this week hence the couple of Edugeek posts - must be the weather! Having fun with some windows file servers and video streaming? Users downloading to a file share are having videos go about 1mpbs and playback/streaming is constantly buffering. Network infrastructure is quite good, file server is in RAID, seems to be a new issue according to the users, can't really think of anything else to try? Best, Miles

Hi all, I have a secondary site we are slowly migrating teachers to a new set of OUs with fresh group policies, structure etc. Currently teachers have nothing centrally stored apart from a mapped profile drive, so as devices are getting older we were worried about files not getting backed up. Therefore we have setup folder redirection policies to move any locally stored files to their user area \Desktop\Documents etc. We moved the user to the new OUs, logged in, waited forever for the files to move and then checked that everything had redirected (we only checked on the computer, not on the file server at this point). Logged the user off, changed the username and home folder to their new name as had a name change, logged in and the desktop had disappeared. Everything else - downloads, recycle bin etc had stayed there, but the entire desktop contents had disappeared. I've tried changing back to the old OUs, changing the username/profile path back, I've ran Recuva and EaseUS to see if they've been deleted and have got nowhere. Not on the server or locally on the machine. The C drive storage implies to me that they are somewhere on the laptop but I've ran TreeSize to see if they're there which has come up with nothing too. We had 250 users to migrate. We've done over 200 so final stretch now, but this one is puzzling me. I've got extensive experience managing windows server on both a 1st and 3rd line support level, so this one is really puzzling me as have never seen it before. I have the laptop still in a hope we can try and get the files back. My logic is that if they've been moved I can get them from where they've moved to, or surely if they'd been deleted EaseUS/Recuva would have picked up on that? Best, Miles

I’d just check your filtering can cover any increase in scope as some solutions have an issue with this. Also could you not make a new SSID on the same VLAN, give that as the preferred network to the chromebooks then once they’re all switched over, delete the existing one?

I have a site that kept to OVS and A1. A3 didn’t provide great benefit at the time and we just added a P1 license. There was/is too much on prem reliance to move to a licensing model that leans on cloud so heavily.

Hi, I have a site that we are setting Edulink up for - I’m hoping to get it linked to our civica cashless catering. I have tried a few times to get Civica to assist but they can be hard to get a hold of at the best of times. The error we are getting is NRSTrustE Warning: There was no endpoint listening at http://(IP for cashless server)/trustews/truste.asmx?wsdl that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details. Did anyone else run into this? I understand I have to put the IP of the server with the agent into an allowlist but the suggested path of this file isn’t there on our cashless server. It is defo a civica issue not Edulink as their support is really helpful, but with no guidance on trust-e it is proving challenging! Thanks, Miles

I believe so, yes - personally I would move away from a flat network ASAP - even if you build a basic servers/printers/students/staff/guest setup this would make life easier in the long run.

Hi, There was a patch released to fix this a couple of months back IIRC. Can't remember if it was a special release but one of the fixes was to do with Office 365 authentication.

Part of the work I did was implementing MDT/WDS with a view of moving to SCCM (as opposed to manual installs!) Thanks for the script, I have slightly less strong alternatives but that one will be very useful to deploy as a GPO to clean up the devices. I'm a massive fan of bulkcrapuninstaller too which is good for 1-1 machines. A great script, thanks for sharing

Thanks Steve, hopefully remnants of slow logins are from where the offline files policy is being pulled down. I can remove the apps from the image, do you know if there is a quick way of doing this post-install via powershell etc? We use the GPOs for removing old profiles, I said delprof for ease of use but I'm using the 'Clear profiles after x users' policy and might use Delprof2.0 in a bi-weekly script to polish up. The site is being upgraded to 8gb but unfortunately this isn't all in one go. Thanks for the tips.

Anyone got a fix for this? I've found this for Groove Agent and HaLion sounds? Steinberg asked us to change the folder to Full Control but this has made little to no impact

Netsweeper non SSB has almost instant changes unless I've been using an older version. I made a change a week or so ago to allow a visitor's VPN through and it authenticated almost simultaneously of making the change.

Hi Steve, Looks like a good idea. I'm always a fan of keeping SSIDs down if possible e.g. if you have a network already accepting RADIUS authentication for Staff then there are little to no benefits of creating one for students as you should be able to set the VLAN, speed, default filtering etc by an AD group rather than the SSID which most people do? Looks like you've already thought of this when you move from being a flat network. It may also be worth (provided that students have unique AD logins) setting up a generic 'iPads' network with WPA2 then setting the smoothwall to use a captive portal which asks for the student credentials once per hour (or 30 mins depending on their use etc). This means that filter logs are attributed to a user's name rather than the iPad they were using on that day which may cut down on some work?

Paxton is a great system, haven't used the Inventry integration however have looked at the demo at Bett and was a powerful tool for data etc. I would recommend spec'ing them with the mifare readers as you can do more with the cards (plus you'll likely find mifare cards cheaper than the Paxton Hitag2 cards). Giving staff fobs and/or cards may be an option especially if trying to encourage them to sign out as many put their lanyards/photo ID away before they leave. TLDR the cost of a mifare reader will be much cheaper in the long run than being tied into Paxton cards

Hi all, I have a secondary site with sixth form with around 1500 students, 250 staff and 1000+ devices with a mix of laptops and desktops. My background is predominantly SMBs however find myself increasingly in the education space, so my experience is very slim with multiple users using multiple devices (rather than 10:1 or 1:1 setups which don't have as major problems/turnover). The core infrastructure at the site is very modern with 1gb switching and whole-site Ruckus coverage. All devices have SSDs however some are older HP units with slower processors but all devices with at least 4gb RAM. Since coming onboard I have done major work to get the AD setup up to speed and implement best practices, we have also built a new OU structure to try and 'standardise' where possible. I have also put together new GPOs to ensure there is nothing legacy as this had been merged from a legacy admin/curriculum network, putting users and computers under their own OUs and trying to segregate as logically as possible. Over the past few months (from starting as local only profiles), we have tried redirected profiles which didn't work particularly well as students weren't logging off which were causing corrupt profiles, so have now gone back to local profiles (not default or mandatory) but using folder redirection on everything including AppData(Roaming) to each user's folder on the file server. This has cut logon times from about 7 minutes to roughly 3 minutes (although had a 45 second fresh login on test). I've also disabled oobe graphics on first sign in and enabled detailed logon messages on sign in - students are getting hung on Applying Group Policy Folder Redirection Policy (I've now disabled offline files for student machines which seemed to have cured this one) but they are now stuck at Preparing Windows which is presumably where the local profile is being created. Delprof runs every 2 new users to keep the drives free as we have some DfE machines with the 64gb drives... Any tips on speeding logon times up greatly appreciated or any GPOs I might be missing. Would love to hear how everyone has theirs setup or would have in an ideal if they started from scratch? Best, Miles
