But I have, I'm afraid, a fundamental objection to EDM's.....there is NEVER an "early day" so the only function EDMs perform is to garner support and waste Parliamentary paper. May I therefore suggest whjat could be a more fruitful approach. You obviously feel strongly about this issue. I dare say other educationalists do. I would be happy to apply for an Adjournment Debate in either Westminster Hall or the main Chamber in order that these matters could be debated and a Ministerial reply received. Computer says yes. I had to log in first then stand on my head to orientate and then do the keystrokes. Alex

Some bright spark has changed the settings so that the screen is upside down. I know there is a simple combination of keys to press to re adjust the screen but it has been a while since I have done this. Does anyone know what the procedure is? Thanks Alex

Hey, Edugeek. Imagine starting up a company that can provide outsourced IT provision? Edugeek UK Ltd ???? Perfect timing and a golden opportunity, after all you already have most of the IT support provision personnel as members of this sight. It would be something that I would be interested in exploring? The question is why haven't the unions got involved already? It is clear to me that County Councils are going to outsource wholesale, with the view to reducing 'wage costs', and in return getting a 'professional level of service'. What the councils fail to realise is that they already get a professional service at a laughable cost. A question comes to my head is this. Do the councils think that because they pay peanuts, they have got a load of monkeys working for them? Do they think that long term it will save shedloads of money because theere will be less overheads such as NI, pension provision etc. So lets just go private and let them pay for it all?? They may think that if they pay a lot of money this equates to better service levels. If this is the case they need to wake up and smell the roses because at present they have; 1. Loyal employees that do the job for peanuts and with very little training because they like making a difference. 2. Usually excellent service levels that would most probnably surpass any service level that 'outsourced' companies could provide. 3. Local knowledge of the schools system, hence providing a tailored service at very little cost, and a more effcieient service.l What they will get is; 1. A company whose focus is on profits, not edcuation. 2. A company who will send whoever out to the school who will spend ages orienteering themselves before actually comencing work. 3. Reduced service levels as time =money. 4. Once established and running the whole set up be stung later on as they will all wake up to how much is going to cost. 5. Have massive cost hikes as there will be a reluctance to change formulas/companies. 6. Once and if the money dries up so will the levels of service and companies that wish to bid. The schools then being left with another mess to clear up which theyu have absolutly know control over. May take a few years but mark my words. Perhaps some of us techies should use this golden goose opportunity to start companies up to bid for the projects?? Just a thought. In the meantime we need to contact the unions to see what our redundancies/futures are going to be like? Alex

Hi Our Head is keen on the idea of video conferencing with a school that we twin with in Canada, They have sent me this e-mail, and to be frank, I do not have a clue about video conferencing. What I would like to know is the sort of costs invloved and equipment needed and also what the follwing mean (and if it makes sense to anyone). We will need to work out the logistics, but I would suggest 1 'space' to 1 'space' i.e. class to class (you could put 50 students into 1 space). I was at the point of getting stressed over my workload so came up with the following (see attachment). As I am only contracted to do 37 hours and the workload would take over 40 hours per week, I explained that some things had to give or not get done. I want to add an IP address to a script or similar so that the browser will allow access to that IP address bypasing the proxy server. To explain further. In IE6 I click on tools- internet options - connections - Lan settings - advanced. Then in exceptions there are addresses already pre loaded. I want to add an address so that this address is also pre-loaded. How do I do this? Is there a script that does this and if so where would I find the script?? Thanks Alex
