I believe it to be the other way around! I consider that I have the position - yet not the title I have another Technician under me and for the past week and a bit, a year 10 on work experience! Anything pertaining to the network comes through me. Curricular type things however, come from the ICT Coordinator (Deputy Head) or Head of ICT. I still walk round school with a badge that says 'ICT Technician' (/me looks down and realises he hasn't put it on today yet). Though it is in the offing to change that quite soon. Andy.

Just bought the educational site license to Macromedia Studio MX 2004. (Yay, we've spent some ELCs on proper software!) Has anyone succesfully deployed it over their network (without visiting every machine)? The usual places don;t seem to have come up with much, and I don;t have the best track record for creating my own MSIs (already tried it - didn't work - though will investigate further). Aimed at Lancs folks really: Did anyone get an email from an [email protected] this morning with 'asd' in the subject and 'asdf' in the body? A bit suspicious, should I be worried? It was a bit odd, as as ( :? ) are my initials, but I think that's just coincidence. Andy.

I had to think hard what you meant by that - a 'killer app' for lab technicians would be very useful here!

Most new machines have no CD or Floppy drives, and my next batch of machines will be thin clients - pen drives are allowed. Access to Floppy and CD is currently allowed where available - but staff cannot install (neither can students for that matter ) So I often get the phonecalls: "I'm trying to install such-a thing but it won't let me", allowing me to step in with the licensing, dodgy software, etc. lecture! I think I know what you're getting at there - even that's a pain. I have 4 teacher machines where it would be desirable to restrict student's access to them. So can I say DO NOT ALLOW LOGON TO such a machine - NOPE! I have to say ALLOW LOGON TO the other 120 machines instead!! (and also do that for each of the 400 kids!).

You would think that's bread and butter Network Operating System stuff wouldn't you? But nope! The MS way points to something called CConnect - to be found in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit (not sure if it's in the 2003 one) - which is a couple of VBS scripts and requires a SQL Server (or MSDE I believe) database. Seems a lot of work for something that sounds so simple. I believe Netware just needs you to tick a box (or similar)! Andy.

I am currently looking at Exchange - how do you get it to read ALL emails? (Brand new to Exchange - probably missed something obvious ). Andy.

PCounter is unfortunately NOT free! I am looking at it myself. Had a quote of about £550 per server (which is one here!). I too would be interested to hear about any free (or very cheap) alternative though I fear it probably doesn't exist. Andy.

I subscribe to PC Pro, so will look out for it also. One of the columnists in PC Pro seems to work in education a bit, if I remeber correctly. Andy.

Hmmmm.... never thought about it in those terms before. We have (as I presumed most schools did) and AUP for the kids and parents to sign. This is more presented as 'you will be going on the Internet, but not until you sign this'. I suppose it would be possible for the parents to refuse to sign if they didn't want their kids going on.
