The temp outside is about 21C.. the temp inside is at least 31C..

I got a server screeching like a bloody banshee!

 

Ive got a desk fan pointed at it and no more A/C units

 

Gonna need to start shutting down servers at this rate

You should recommend shutting the server down to prevent any possible long-term damage to the hardware caused by overheating. That might focus the minds upon getting A/C made available, as it should be cheaper & quicker than having to replace a 'cooked' server.

Due to the increase in ambient temperature.. Our servers are starting to show signs of overheating

Myself and my Technician are trying to find a manageable solution but we may need to start shutting down servers in the meantime.

 

One server is already close to becoming dangerously hot – this is the terminal server which powers the units in the staff room. As a result I may be forced to shut this down. This will mean that there will be NO PC access in the staff room.

 

I will send out an email if we need to start shutting servers down.

Please ensure you save work regularly, if you are teaching in an ICT suite can I also strongly suggest you create a backup lesson plan in case we lose pupil network access and get pupils to save frequently.

My vote is for SIMS!

 

Definitely not all in one go... it has far more impact if they drop out one at a time

I'd work your way through methodically and shut down the servers that are being used the most.

I found that the portable units were a pile of dog steaming dog mess unless you could get it nice fresh air from outside. We had one in our server room for about 4 months before we got proper AC annd it did reduce it a bit down to about 45 from 50!!! We did have one PSU go on the DC so it made them hustle the contractors to get the AC in. Edited May 6, 2008 by DSapseid

Not far behind you, I've just checked my thermometer we're at 30C. I know when it gets too hot as the file server sounds like a 747 taking off as all it's fans hit maximum!! - Normally about 32C!!

 

No aircon here either, but at least in August in our new site we have a dedicated server/comms room with aircon

As a responsible & professional member of the team, you should agree a priority list of servers with SMT aimed at protecting students ability to work & staff's ability to teach and plan to shut them down in the order of least priority first.

 

Alternatively as BOFH you should shut the servers down in the order that causes the 'decision' makers & budget holders most pain to focus their minds a bit more

When I arrived at my school 5 years ago, we had an admin server & UPS in a steel unventilated cupboard & it ran 'HOT'. I warned SMT that it would shorten its life dramatically & I was ignored. One day during the summer the UPS batteries went 'pop' & it went down. I replaced the UPS batteries & moved the UPS out of the cupboard. Then the NIC on the server started to play up, then it started getting random memory faults until one day it gave up the will to live.

 

I made sure it's replacement was too big to fit in the steel cupboard, it was installed instead in the fully A/C equipped server room

 

I think BOFH may yield quicker results, but it pains me as a professional to recommend it .........

server room = aircon...I can't believe that some haven't got it! IIRC, Telford Council fitted all "nodal" schools with it for servers at planning stage.

 

Ours should be sat at 17, with the backup unit sat at 19. On the few occasions we've had a total fail of the A/C, we've hit the 30s and one one overnight, 45s...the Poweredges have gone red light, but we've caught them before they hit "safety off". Always been a case of opening the window/door and grabbing as many fans as possible.

 

The portables aren't great..but they're better than nothing, just.

We dont even have a "server" room as such

they are spread in 3 areas

A cupboard at the back of 1 room which also has a rack with the LEA switches. it has 1 portable AC Unit with a hose out the window

we have mnost of the servers in a big windowless room in the middle of the school which has 1 AC Unit with a hose out the wall.. this room has the DCs and SIMS.. as well as about 6 other servers..

And there is my office... which is about 10' square with 1 window that acts like a greenhouse (faces east) in the morning.. with 3 servers.. and NO AIRCON..

 

I'm sweating my knackers off and the servers arent coping..

 

Im awaiting on 2 AIRCONS.. so should get them for september

1. blinds or white paper on the windows.

 

2. Go on a raiding spree for old PSU/case fans, cableties, an ATX PSU, and a paperclip and make up a fan grid array. Noisy, but pretty damn effective..

 

We've got..ooh..laserjet 4250, 1 Xerox waxjet, 3 PCs, 2 laptops, 2 humans, a glass wall to outside with blinds, and lots of furniture in here, and we're at a comfy temperature. The stable door is helping..it's like a permanent exhaust for the heat, and the windows open at the top to bring in cool air.

 

The teaching office next door has tiny windows, same size office as us, 7-8 staff, 4 PCs and SatCab1 full of switches, plus UPS and 3 servers..again, temps are comfy.
