Moving KMS from 2008R2 to 2012R2

So im "trying" to move my KMS from 2008R2 to 2012R2 and its not going very well as im migrating physical boxes to VMs.

 

I would have thought it would be a process of uninstall from 2008R2 and then install onto 2012R2 however it doesnt seem that simple - does 2012R2 support the Win7/2008r2 keys?

 

I'm currently using Volume Activation Management Tool to keep track of the windows and office license to which i have now removed the windows license and altered the _tcp info in DNS to point to the new KMS server. Should i install VAMT2.0 on the 2012R2 box to license Win7 machines?

 

Ive looked online to see if there are any documents but struggling to find win7 activation on 2012R2 KMS machines.

 

Has anyone done this before and could help me out.

No, VAMT 3.1 is perfectly happy administering Windows 7, you should have no need to use 2.0 now. I currently use it on Server 2008 R2, but I don't issue 8.1 keys from it (which you have to install an update to support). You don't need this for Server 2012 R2.

 

What errors are you getting from VAMT?

Going though the setup on Server 2012R2 at activation type: Select Key Management Server (KMS) *put in the name of the server* -> Click next -> at install your KMS host key - i thought this would be the key for Win7. I have only got MAK keys for server 2012R2 and no KMS keys. Would i need to speak to MS and get a KMS key for Server 2012R2?

Yes, you'll need a Server 2012 R2 KMS key.

I emailed MS yesterday afternoon, got in this morning to find an email from them with KMS keys

 

Ive got the 2012R2 KMS license installed on the host, allowed the port though the windows firewall on the host (i had to disable the firewall briefly so the KMS key could be verified by MS. Should i be using VAMT 3.0? If so, i didnt realise it needed a SQL database as VAMT 2.0 just installed. Has anyone else got VAMT 3.0 working with a SQL express database? - not looking forward to moving the KMS again if this is the case.

i never bothered with VAMT as the basic command line options works nicely as it is, you dont get the nice GUI tho

So my client machines are communicating with the KMS host. If I run slmgr /dlv on the host I can see that the total requests received: 235 and requests with license status licensed: 235.

 

However, if I run slmgr /dli on all Win7 client machines it says the OS is licensed with a different key however it is looking at the correct KMS host even though the key on the host is different.

 

Am I right in thinking that I need to install 2 keys on the 2012R2 host? A 2012R2 KMS key and the Windows 7/2008R2 key?

 

If I run slmgr /ato on a client it used to say it couldn't activate however now, it says it has just activated.

 

Am I looking too deep into this activation stuff?

 

How about moving the office2010 KMS to server 2012R2? I read that this isn't supported.

VAMT 3 doesn't need full SQL to work, mine just installed as a complete package on one old VM.

hmmm, I think something is working. Downloaded the office2010 KMS host license pack, got that installed and put my product key in and it accepted it so will wait to see what happens now. Ive changed the DNS record to the new host so hopefully office should start linking to the key on the new KMS host... fingers crossed

when you run /DLI on the client the key it will show should be the generic KMS client key and not the KMS key of the host server

ahhh I see, well I hope things are working, time will tell. The numbers on the OS KMS are increasing however the office ones still say 0. Will give it time to see what that does.
