[ltsb, 1809] How are you guys removing old/stale local profiles Windows 10 LTSB 1809

Just noticed that a high number of our pcs are showing low disk space.

 

We've now enabled Storage sense (not sure that's going to help us here), but have also identified that most of the bloat is due to ex groups profiles still being on the machines.

 

Back in the day we used delprof.exe (win XP era!). But not sure what the best approach is here.

 

We can manually delete the profiles to circumvent the issue, however i'll looking for a long term solution.

 

Just after any pointers that you guys might have. How are you doing it?

 

In a past era, we'd reimaged the machines every summer holiday..... but there's less of a requirement for this

 

Anybody using this or know if it works?

Yup I use that policy. Works well in 1903.

Use the same policy here. Mine is set to 7 days. First boot after a half-term and it'll clean itself up. Teachers tend to complain that the first login after a half-term is slow and some of their OneDrive files-on-demand need redownloading, but I don't care. Students don't tend to notice, but 7 days is generally long enough for them to keep returning to computers for computing lessons and have a quicker logon.

It says on restart, i assume it doesn't do it on shutdown then?...... so what happens during a windows update restart.

 

How many days do you have it set to?

It does a check on startup, and will flag and delete any profiles that have a timestamp older than your specified age in the GPO. If you have a lot of profiles on a computer, you might see a slightly longer time before it gets to the logon screen as it deletes stuff in the background. With SSDs these days, though, you barely notice.

Oh ok so its not just on restart..... thanks for this.... we have ssds site wide..... 240GB

Restart is an option on the setting - x days or on every restart. I wouldn’t use that setting though as it’ll slow down frequent users.
