Default gateways and proxy server

Hello fellow techies!

 

I'm new to this forum and to Schools! I started in April and was immediately given the task of removing RM 2.4 and installing a normal W2K3 network. A lot of work for the summer, especially on my own!

 

Anyway, two questions, is it possible to set the default gateway by either a GPO or via DHCP? This would save the problems with teachers who use their laptops on networks at home and at school. And also, I thought I spotted a policy that would force proxy server on and a server address somewhere in policies, but now can't find it!

 

Any help would be much appreciated! This is probably the first of mny daft questions! It's a different world in schools compared with commercial!

You set the default gateway in the DHCP scope and the proxy can be set in the GPO.

User Configuration - Internet Explorer Maintenance - Connection - Proxy Settings.

To set the Default Gateway via DHCP do the following (assuming you're using a Win2k3 DHCP server):

 

Start > Programs > Administrator Tools > DHCP

 

Click the + on your scope to expand the tree, right click on Scope Options then hit Configure Options

 

Place a tick in the "003 Router" section and enter your gateway's IP address into the field and hit add.

 

To set a proxy server in your GPO do the following:

 

Open the Group Policy Object Editor (Probably best to edit your Default Domain Policy)

 

Navigate to the following:

 

User Configuration > Windows Settings > Internet Explorer Maintenance > Connection > Proxy Settings

 

Add your proxy info there and all should be good!

Open the Group Policy Object Editor (Probably best to edit your Default Domain Policy)

 

 

It is recommended that you leave your default policy intact and create another policy at the same level to make any changes incase you screw something up on the default domain policy.
