I Have been using GLPI with fusion inventory for a good few years and it has gone from strength to strength with printer levels and PC monitoring checking software installed and so on and it works really well. Now From the same people I have seen Shinken | The next Industry Standard in IT Monitoring I know some people use NAGIOS but I am wondering if anyone has used this and is so what is it like?? It looks fairly new. I am going to give it a go but would like to hear from people that have use it and maybe compared it to NAGIOS.

I've been eyeing up Shinken of late because it (or Icinga) would cure my "I need to do something about the Nagios UI" itch. I like Icinga classic (the newer Ajax UI lags too much though IMO) and I need to have a proper play with Shinken. Edited by pete

Any thoughts on this since you trialed it?

 

Looks good from an initial scan through the screenshots etc.

 

How was it to set up etc?

I've added it to the "things that might be awesome in a bit" list. I could sit down and make it work properly with our setup, but I've more pressing issues and a known-good alternative (Icinga classic). The UI is good, especially the Everything is Good/Bad simplistic view* and the experimental discovery UI is a welcome feature (albeit not ready for production). With a bit of code review and some tightening up we'll use it at some point, just not now.

As a follow-up to this, I played with Shinken again the other day and the discovery isn't bad. The rules definitely need tweaking before unleashing on a network and the generated host configs need checking too, but it's handy.

 

For example: If host discovery* finds a webserver running on port 80/443, it adds the http and/or https template to the host config it generates. On a network of any size, doing so is suboptimal because for every webserver it'll find, it'll find 20-odd web-managed devices that require auth. A "needs auth" response from a webserver generates a warning in Shinken because the check is looking for a 200 response.

I've tested both in the past and each one had something annoying about it that halted the tests. Since I can't remember precisely what was annoying about them, I should probably go and poke them again to see if they've fixed it.

 

I'm also playing with OSSIM from Alienvault (albeit on the lab network at home) and it's pretty neat....until you hit a paywall raw log access in the UI. The UI is very good. The vulnerability scanner (like all of them) needs a fair amount of tuning to get decent results - lots of false positives.

This is on my to do list somewhere, too. What I would ideally like is something which can tell me which specific switch port a device is plugged in to, i.e. Switch 3 Port 7 is computer Admin-01 or whatever - does anyone know of some software which can do that?
