Joomla 2.5 or 3.0 or Wordpress?

If you were building a site now which version would you go for? As we don't use many extensions, which seems to be the main stumbling point for adopters of 3.0, it looks to me like 3.0 is the way to go. 2.5 is only supported until spring of next year, which given upgrades between major versions can be a pain, also makes me sway towards 3.0.

 

Any experienced people have any advice?

1 thing with using Joomla 3.0 is that it is a STS (Short Term Supported) release which will mean that you will need to upgrade the version about every 6 months (Release and support cycle - Joomla! Documentation). Joomla 2.5 is a LTS (Long Term Supported) release which is supported for 27 months (until March 2014). Joomla 3.0 is currently only supported until April this year (Joomla - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

 

With the above in mind, I would probably go with Joomla 2.5 because it saves upgrading everything 6 months to a version that is supported still.

 

Yes some upgrades between LTS releases can be a pain but if you are not using many extensions, then it shouldn't be that hard to upgrade.

I've recnently done a Joomla site and a Wordpress site.. I like both software, have found it slightly easier to edit the templates for wordpress than Joomla. Wordpress is easier to understand the menu system than Joomla.

The problem with Wordpress is that it get hacked all the frickin' time!

I'd go with Joomla personally...but it depends how important the website is to you.

@LickOfPaint Joomla can get hacked as well and I have had to details with Joomla sites that have been hacked. Never seen a Wordpress site hacked

You can also use demo account of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal via their official websites to see one of them is proper for you. My favorite program is Joomla. Joomla allows you to build a site with more content and structure flexibility than Wordpress offers, but still with fairly easy, intuitive usage.

I've had joomla installs hacked way more often than WordPress. In fact on my own servers WordPress has not yet been breached. As long as you harden both you shouldn't have a problem.

 

Don't have administration account as administrator or administrator, disable everything you aren't using, chmod the right permissions everywhere, good quality passwords.

 

I once hadn't finished hardening a joomla site and it was already compromised before I'd set it all up

 

Wife loves WordPress with custom themes to make it stand out well.

 

I started with joomla personally but these days it's all WP for us

I've just taken over a Joomla 2.5 site, i'm unsure if it's Joomla in general or just this install but it's really messy. I much prefer the layout of Wordpress.
