Installing XP from WDS image to preinstalled Windows 8 laptop.

Hi,

 

We have 8 new laptops that came preinstalled with Windows 8 and I need to install XP on them.

 

I have tried using our XP image from WDS which I have injected the required drivers into. It appears to install fine with no problems, restarts and then shows the XP loading screen. It then just shuts down, no blue screen, no errors, just turns off.

 

I have disabled secure boot and ahci within the BIOS and I can install XP from a CD without any issues. The only other thing I can think of is that the hardware is 64bit and the image 32 but I have installed 32bit images onto 64 machines with no problem before. (this may have only been 7 not xp, I can't remember)

 

Any help with this would be great, Thanks.

You'll have a hell of a time finding drivers for an os that old on modern hardware. At the least you may need sata drivers to make it boot even with ahci off, unless there is an ide compatibility mode still built in.

Yeah I did think that but I have found XP drivers on the manufacturers website.

 

It boots fine if I install from the CD so the SATA drivers shouldn't be an issue.

Really? installing XP now? Are you ABSOLUTELY 100% UNABLE to use it otherwise? It sounds like a copout but you really are wasting your and your schools time doing it without bloody good reason.

Yeah I know what you mean but I'm just the technician following orders from the powers that be!

 

All our student machines are still XP so we need it on these new laptops. Looks like I'll have to create a new image!

is the product key in the bios for win 8?

 

You can run into issues . Is your xp key vl ?

 

I have to concur you should move off xp. Its like having a vcr on a hi def tv.

Sounds like a HAL issue. From what I've seen SATA driver issues will cause the machine to BSOD and reboot continually, while the incorrect HAL will blank the screen and freeze. If WDS gives the image to you as an option though then it was sealed with the correct HAL in place. What does the HAL line in your sysprep file look like?
