Recover files from resized and formatted partition

Hi

A friend decided to resize (1 disk) his C: partition and reduce his D: partition. He thought everything was backed up on D but a folder was missed and he resized D and reformatted to realise his error.

Whats the best deep drive scan tool out there as he is missing a important file now?

I have told him if its important dropbox it but its too late now.

Raw image the drive first then run any tools against that image. testdisk might be able to dig something out.

Sadly I dont have physical access, the guy is in the US so its screen sharing to the rescue.

Any accessing of the partition read/write will make it harder. Has the partition been reinstalled over? What platform is it currently running to access the drive.

 

Testdisk may be able to pull an NTFS link tree after a quick format but the odds go down if it has been accessed.

 

Other undelete stuff like recuvera may be able to grab more especially if the drive is dirty.
