Restrict File types by user / group

Hi

 

I need to restrict the use of some files by certain groups users, some users need to be able to save avi's but don't want all users to due to space resrictions, does any one user a 3rd party software for this?

Hi,

You may find that you can do this with standard tools built into Windows Servers. If you install/enable the File Server Resource Manager tools (on any server from 2008 or newer) you will find that you get access to what you need. To quote Technet: "Create file screens to block files that belong to particular file groups from being saved on a volume or in a folder tree."

Create a new Security Group and add the users in question to this group. If possible, move all the AVIs into a single folder and edit the permissions to only include your newly created Security Group.

Thanks, I've had a look at this and it can only be applied for file directories from what I can see, whereas I want to create a policy saying no one can save avis, then create a group say y10 media students, and allow them to be an exception

I thought about doing that, but ideally students will only be able to access their own work, don't want them to edit or delete anyone elses

I believe that should be possible with the policies, but I have not configured it for a while so will need to test it out. Could you create a file classification (AVI files) create a group (everyone except Year 10 students) and apply a banned policy on the folder structure?

create the file classification with what? Server Resource Manager? I can't find how to apply or not apply to a given group

Currently have 2008 R2 but if needs be can purchase 2012
