DHCP Settings

Sorry for a daft question.

 

But in the DHCP part of the server in the IPv4.

I have adress pool, adress leases and reservations.

 

Now in the adress pool i can see the ip ranges for distrabution. i can also see ip adresses that are excluded from the range.

So normally if i add a Ip printer i manually set it on the printer then exclude that ip in the adress pool.

 

Whats this Resevations section for though???

If you set a reservation based on a devices MAC address, each time it tries to get an IP DHCP will assign it the reservations IP.

So in the scenario above.

Adding a printer, if I find a free ip address and manually set it on the printer.

Would you then add that to the excluded range AND add it to the reservations.

im think what im asking is when would you add something to the excluded range and when would you add something to the reservation

No what I'd do (and do do) is before connecting the printer to the network find its MAC address, go into reservations and enter the MAC address and a custom IP address.

 

Then when the printer connects it will be given that IP address. No need to touch the local printer settings.

You would exclude addresses that you require for devices like servers. That way the address is never given out. You would reserve an IP if you wanted a device to always get the same address via DHCP. This is better than a static address because if you ever needed to change it you would only need to change it on the server and not have to visit the device to change it locally.
