gshaw Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I'm looking for a work-spec laptop at the moment, something solid \ portable with enough grunt to last easily 3-5 years of moving around regularly. Considered a tablet-esque convertible but still seems a bit gimmicky for real tech work so options seem to be... ThinkPad T430s - hard-working, rock-solid business laptop from Lenovo (US) Latitude E6430 Details Would go for an i5, probably 8GB RAM, any thoughts on either of the above?

We use Dell's but they are just not robust enough and we are only getting 2 possibly 3 years out of some of ours. We don't have fixed desks and all have laptops all E6400/6410 from Dell and find them to be shocking machines. We have some of the E6430's slightly better build but I personally don't think anything beats a HP.

gshaw Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 I think I'm leaning towards the Lenovo T430s, I'm a big fan of the scrabble tile Lenovo keyboards having had a couple of them now (x100e, E330, E530) and the rest of the package seems pretty decent.

Finding replacement parts a pita ( if you google for the hmm ) then trawl through the part numbers, you generally find 2 or 3 part numbers for one part and a pain to decipher which part it needs 2. Not as modular as the Dell laptops or as quick and easy ( think that is down to parts being more universal ). If you compare swapping a tft screen on a Dell versus a Lenovo, I find the Dells a lot easier without the awkwardness. 3. Think parts are a bit cheaper due to being universal ( could be wrong on this point though ). Never repaired a HP laptop so can't comment on them.

glennda Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 (edited) I would recommend the lenovo range - personally i have an E430, 8Gb ram 256gb ssd and it flies, use it on the road and with the new usb 3.0 docks at a desk its just like working on a normal machine with dual screen etc. Ive just rolled out 25 t430U with a client and they have gone down a brilliantly. Never had problems with parts but then i deal with lenovo direct. Uk support is still from IBM Edited January 3, 2013 by glennda

I had a HP ProBook 5330m with an SSD it's a great machine!! Pick them up on eBay relatively cheap I believe. Run Everything I needed it too... Virtual Machines, Visual Studio for various SDK bits and bobs etc. pretty sweet machine to be fair.. oh! and it's lightweight. James.
