Office365 (well email) for students

I am trying my best to get Live@edu working before converting to office365 (well the email side) to work so that students can have their own school email addresses.

 

I have proved i own my domain by speaking to the ISP and asking them to create the TXT file Students and insert the random characters on my domain so i now have students.domain.co.uk. I have also asked them to create 2 CNAME entries webmail.students and mail.students to point to outlook.com/students.domain.co.uk. I also have the TXT file on my internal DNS servers. Does that need to be there?

 

This works from the outside world but i cannot get it to work inside the domain. How can i get round this? I have tried adding a CNAME (webmail.students) to my forward lookup zone to domain.co.uk in my local internal domain servers at work, but no joy.

 

Also, i can send emails from the administrator account to my work email but i cannot send any emails to students.domain.co.uk. Do i need to speak to my ISP again and ask them to create a MX record for students.domain.co.uk as i don't have a record for this.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you will have [email protected] for your students email?

 

The way I know it is that you'd therefore need to have seperate MX records set for students.domain.co.uk, yes.

 

With regards to accessing webmail, what's wrong with the full url of outlook.com?

Thats right. It means i only have to manage the exchange server for the staff and the licenses for spam too. Also it means that if the net dies staff can still email each other.

 

I kinda found the page on live@edu for the MX settings, the SPF and the autodiscover for outlook.

 

As for the full URL of outlook, it says in the upgrade notes for office365 to use a CNAME and point it to https://www.outlook.com/students.domain.co.uk that way i can use webmail or mail.students.domain.co.uk

If you haven't already fully deployed Live@edu I would strongly recommend starting straight on Office 365.

We haven't as i was waiting to move over before setting users up, however i need my ISP to make the domain changes before i do

I wouldn't even go through the upgrade. Cancel Live@edu, and sign up straight onto Office 365 for education - there's no extra benefit in waiting to be upgraded and it avoids complexity.

I suppose the rest of the county have gone down the same route and at the time when i was looking at emails for students (about 6 months ago) ms had better integration tools with AD.

When I upgraded from Live@EDU to Office365 we had to change all the CNAME / MX and TXT records to stop some minor issues we were having. I'd highly suggested starting from scratch with Office365

The TXT file is there just for the setup process to validate domain ownership, it's not needed once that is done.

Does live/365 even support MX's for subdomains?

Actually the DNS host would have to support MX on subdomains before 365 gets involved unless your using 365 to do the DNS. I looked at that but did not want MS to be looking after DNS records for my entire domain preferred either my own DNS servers or my registrars

You need to register the subdomain,

 

students.domain.co.uk ( a host on a domian )

 

is different to

 

.students.domain.co.uk ( a domain )

So i should i register students.domain.co.uk with the ISP. This seems to be getting messy. I thought i could just have mail.domain.co.uk as my main MX record pointing to my exchange server then have a MX pointing to students.domain.co.uk as my office365 domain. Everything so fair is working but just need to see if my ISP will allow this change. So far they (ISP) have been very helpful and told me if things will work or not.
