Backing up games

I have just been handed one of my sons £40 new game with a scratch 5mm in from the outside edge, (all the way around.) I'm sure this has happened inside the Xbox drive. Is there a way I can backup the disks as it seems like a very expensive business to buy another disk each time. Has anyone tried the backup sites? How about this option? I am not trying to do anything illegal , just a way of preserving the original.

Also, has anyone else had problems with their console in this way?

Are we talking about the 360?? If so:

 

As it says in the article, copying the games aren't as straight forward as you'd want with an XBOX, although I'm pretty sure you can get software to copy them nowadays (bearing in mind that article is from 2004 which was before the 360s release date) then you've got to buy discs that work as they're quite picky by brand (verbatamin tend to be good ones).

 

Not only this, but if you flash your consle, there's a high chance of MS banning your console from online play. I've not looked at it for a while but last I knew it was quite awkward to avoid as you had to be constantly updating your firmware (maybe something's changed recently that makes this easier).

 

But I have heard reports of many people's XBOXs scratching their discs, although I've never personally experienced it.

This was a big issue for the older machines but still an issue if you move the xbox while a disk is spinning inside it.

99% certain the 360 won't read copied disks. You need to mod (jtag) your XBox which would void warranties, and is of dubious legality.

Hmm, seems like catch 22, get a copy of the disk but lose xbox live.., I think pc gaming route is looking like a more viable option in the future.

I like having the disks.

 

Download only just makes me think "I'm paying full shop prices for nothing".

It's the same principle.

 

However, there's a limit to how much it can fix. [i once had a DVD that froze on a specific section, used something similar to that and all it did was move the freeze point.]

I've got the odd scratched 360 disk at home, whenever this happens, I tend to install to my hard drive from an unscratched disk, then use my scratched one to boot.

 

It's worked okay so far with MW2 and CoD:World at War.

 

The damage was caused by moving a console with the game still spinning... never re-arrange a gaming area while on pause!!

I bought a 2nd hand game which has the nasty ring on the disc. I had a look around the interwebz and saw someone suggesting using toothpaste. Believe it or not it worked.

Just discovered that EA games will replace the disk for a tenner if I send it back. Better than another 40 Quid! I think we will go down the route of putting them onto a HDD, however due to my 1.5Mb broadband, downloading isn't brilliant.
