2008 32-bit to Windows 2008 R2 64-bit - HELP.

I just installed a fresh 2008 R2 on 64 bit machine but how can I transfer all of the server roles from 2008 32bit to 2008 R2 64bit?

AD (I did a quick test from a client to this domain but isn't necessarily to transfer this role.)

 

DHCP (Currently using it with reserved ips)

 

DNS (Currently at use)

 

How can I transfer DNS and DHCP's datas into 2k8 R2 without overlaps to the nodes?

DNS is easy when you setup the new AD server and make it a DNS server it will automatically make a copy of the data.

 

DHCP again is fairly easy - Back Up and Restore the DHCP Database

DNS you can do during the day with the promotion of a domain controller. DHCP I would do out of hours.

 

You also want to set the bad address check to a few incase there is a few leases outstanding. This means the server checks nothing has them before it dishes them out.

Make sure you restore your DHCP right after you take the backup. Don't take the back then leave it a few hours. It could cause IP conflicts if some leases expire.

dont turn off the old one stop dhcp. If its a domain controller you will need to demote the machine.

Ok; but first I want to clarify this steps I planned to do below;

 

1) 64bit: AD/DNS setup and setup DHCP/restore the back up from 32bit after work.

 

2) Remove the AD from 32bit after the restore DHCP.

If not then you will need to run ADprep from the 2008 r2 cd on the 2008 dc. otherwise you will have all sorts of problems.

Quick thing about DHCP - is your network subnetted/VLANed? If so, you'll also need to get the switching gear to point to the new DHCP server instead of the old one. If not, a backup/restore should do the trick, just make sure the old one is turned off once you do the backup, so there's no overlap.

Alrighty then. Booting up the 64 bit but...could I setup the same netbios name from 32bit? Because they're on the same subnet.

Right about the turned off once the backup is done, that was my first thought. Both machines are on the same network by the way.

You won't be able to name them both the same thing - they both have to be switched on and operating at the same time in order to add the AD and DNS roles, and to do that they need different names and IPs. Technically, you could later change the name, but its really not worth it as you can mess up things badly doing that.

Yeah, that part (Duplicate IP and name) concern me the most. Guess I have to wait for the whole setup and I don't like to get paid for messing it up.
