Local admins cant activate windows + office when joined to domain

Hi,

 

When the odd computer needs activating our technician who uses a local administrator account cant do it. It requires a Domain admin user.

 

It is a MAK key so gets activated by the web.

 

Is there anyway round this one apart from doing it myself or using the management program?

Could try this, we use it a lot when activating new machines.

 

Bang the following into a "Notepad":

 

slmgr.vbs -ipk

then Start slmgr.vbs -ato

 

Save the above as a ".bat" - Run it as Admin, local should do it, on the machine that needs activating. That will install the key. If it doesn't automatically activate - Go to activate and choose to activate it online. Should pick up on the installed key.

This is actually very nice and i will be trying it out tomorrow!

 

We typically just host the key on a protected drive share and copy and paste it in. Simples. When that got annoying we set up a KMS

MAK keys should only be used for small amounts of machines. Anything about about 10, and you should set up a KMS server so it is all automated.

 

However, the issue you may be having may be down to your proxy - does the local admin account have the right proxy details set via netsh winhttp? (ie. in the local admin account, run netsh winhttp show proxy and see if it has anything there). If it isn't then run you need to set it up (if the proxy is already set in IE, you can run netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie).

Didn't think about KMS, shall give it a go when I get back on Wed.

 

My aim is to be able to press a few buttons and then walk away and let it do everything else itself. No more interaction from us needed. Leaves me more time to do better stuff.

 

The only pain I'm having is having five site I'm having to repeat everything five times, e.g. Rolling out a software package so it doesn't get pulled over slow connections. Once it's setup though it shouldn't be too bad.

KMS servers are awesome. The idea is you set it up once and it just does its thing!

 

If my memory is correct, VAMP won't start activating until it has over 10 computers to activate, so don't get disheartened during your testing if it isnt working.
