Im having a few issues with my backups here but i cant quite put my finger on it. I have just tested copying an 8GB file across the network. This is what happens on both servers in terms of network utilisation. Can anyone tell me if this is normal ?

Its an 8gb rar file and it starts copying at 40mb/s and slowly drops over the time of the transfer. I think this is because the transfer speed is averaged over the time of the transfer ?

Hows the free memory on the system if it is a 2008 /R2 machine, depending on the setup it chucks stuff into memory before throwing it anywhere and this process can bind up. Also do you have an realtime AV scanning, it could be that process holding things up.

Yes it is - although the windows calculation is rubbish. You best bet is to start the copy off and time how long it takes. What are you transferring to/from - what path does it go i.e

Server x - switch - fibre/copper/ switch - server Y

as you will need to ensure all is running at 1Gbs (bear in mind the MAX throughput on that is only 120MBs)

Thanks for the reply. I have moved the server to the same cab as the ones which I am backing up and the problems still persist It is now direcltly connected to the same switch as the servers that I am copying from using cat6. Im starting to wonder if this limit is being introduced by a server hardware fault

AAAAAACopy works Fine at high speed

SERVER 1 <---------------------->SERVER2

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA |Problomatic transfer copying to either Raid Hard disk or usb external drive

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA Server 3

This thread might need moving if its not my network. The look of it and the fact server 1 can copy correctly to server 2 seems to show a hardware issue.

Any Ideas

yeh but what im saying is that it says 24 hours for a 8gb file ! where as if i copy to the other server it says 2 mins

copy the file and time how long it takes, then once its on the machine copy from one folder to another (don't move) and see if it still takes that long).

Deffo running 1Gbs Full Duplex?
