Whenever I run windows update on a W8 laptop it just hangs. Proxy settings are in internet options. Is this another stupid oversight or something deeper?

This happens for Windows 8 apps as well. This solution works for Windows 8 apps not sure about Windows update. Worth a try.

netsh
winhttp
import proxy source=ie

Its not just Windows 8. Windows 7 and Vista had the same issue in my experience, as do Server 2008 and 2008 R2 - I have to run that command on all of them to use the proxy for WU.

Weird, laptop went to sleep after being left for some time and when awoken WU had moved on.

Something iffy with this install I think

Edit - Added the netsh command, lets see if it gets further

Your command will also work on one line.

netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie

I think Microsoft expects you to have WSUS on your network

Its off domain Geoff, just using the proxy for network/internet access.

This works just remember to re run it without the proxy settings when not in school as you will stop the updates working at home. also you can run it as one line.

"netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie"

on some machines i have a bat file saved with it in, just remember to run it as an administrator.
