Hi folks,

 

I'm looking at getting ITIL Foundation certification.

 

A friend did this via self study. Is this easy enough, or is it better to do the training course?

 

Either way, can anyone recommend a training company in the Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire area?

It depends on how you learn. I did the self study route, studied for a week (after work, during breaks, etc) and passed on the dot. You can read about it here and here.

I did mine via a training course, when it comes to this kind of topic it's better to have it put in context by an experienced trainer imo.

It depends on whether you want to get the certification or get a deeper learning about ITIL, share experiences and context ... the former can be done via self-study but a training course is brilliant for the latter. QA have been good on other courses for this so I would presume that they would be the same for the ITIL courses. Other training providers are available and you could also consider FITS Practitioner as an option as well.

ITIL is designed to be flexible, and ITS is just an implementation of ITIL that is tailored for schools.

 

I've read through FITS stuff and it is all pretty rational - but TBH I don't think it is necessary if you understand ITIL. You'd have to have only half a brain to not make the connection between an ITIL concept and a specific example in FITS.

 

I'd stick with ITIL as it has more relevance and credence than FITS outside of schools.

You will get all sorts of answers on this one,CyberNerd has pretty much nailed one side of the coin. On the other side....

 

FITS, if your not already ITIL qualified, is heavily tailored to the environment you work in. From a training perspective (if your interested in the relevance of the training) the FITS course will only have delegates from the education sector. What you discuss both with delegates and the trainer, will have a single focus.

 

You will need to have a think about what you need as an individual, an IT team (which is also very important) and a school.

Although I agree to some extent, this may not be obvious for younger or less experienced team members.

 

It might be worth PMing someone like Grumbledook, who I'm sure will be happy to discuss these options with you.

 

Initially, have a think about what are you trying to achieve.

I'll declare my interest here ...

 

I am a FITS Trainer, have sat on the advisory board for The FITS Foundation and have been active in promoting (and supporting) FITS since 2001.

 

The fact that it is derived from ITIL (both v2 and v3), has a healthy smattering of PRINCE2 in there and also goes into more detail around understanding management ... I think FITS has the edge on ITIL in schools. That is ... as long as you have buy in and understanding from your SLT.

 

The other benefit of FITS is that it is a framework ... you don't have to roll it all out ... and you don't have to go to the nth degree with things. A helpdesk / supportdesk / servicedesk ... it can centred around a fully integrated piece of software, which contains all your tickets, SLA management tools, CMDB, asset register, definitive software library, etc ... or it could simply be based around the little exercise book which staff log requests into. Personally I also think it has a greater emphasis on communication and working with others.

 

Professionally, I think your career will do better with ITIL, especially if you are going to work outside of education, but I would recommend FITS to start with and then ITIL afterwards (along with PRINCE2).
