I have noticed an increase of this kind of junk mail, its now going through to my main gmail address, which it hasnt to date, im deleting about 3 of these a day now, whereas about a month ago I never had any of these through

Actually, that's the point.

 

They have a higher success rate from repliers if it's blatantly obvious it's a scam.

Have you seen the pictures from the guys who scam them back and get them to do all sorts of things, tattoos, holding up signs with profanities, there was one i saw in bizarre magazine who managed to get them to send him a carved wooden commodore 64

Ah, yes. 419eaters I used to do a bit of it myself, though never to that degree.. Although I do know there are a lot of scammers tattooed with 'Church of Barney' on them now..

His story was that he was a priest who could only hand over his money to those of his religion, thus, they'd have to do silly things (including get the tattoo) to become initiated. Plausible and hilarious.

 

There were even a few counter-scammers, those skilled enough to extract money from the scammer, though they were generally less-boasting about it, since it's still morally dubious.
