stevef1 Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 Hi all, new to the site and was curious as to what permissions you give to students and staff users, mine are just domain users at the moment but i was thinking about making the staff users that have laptops (most of them) members of the local computer power user group on the laptop the have, anyone else do this/thinking of doing this? thanks stevef1
Scotmk Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 give staff just enough to do there jobs, nothing more or you will have a lot more support to do.......
Guest kerrymoralee9280 Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 Ours have full administrative rights over their laptops. Had no problems with it so far and been doing it for quite a while.
t_guest Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 welcome stevef1 to edugeek same here full administrative rights only on laptop.
chrisa Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 It saves so much support time if you give them local admin and let them get on with it. Thats what we do anyway
michaelf Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 We too give them local admin rights to their laptops and have done since the beginning. We have very few cases where staff install things that break them and on the whole we feel that this approach is less time consuming than having to install everything for them on the machine.
Geoff Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 We give our teachers local admin. The only issue we tend to run in to is when they use the machine on their home connection. Sometimes they come back full of viruses and trojans. Which is nice. Our Network Access Control has so far managed to detect this and shut them down before anything bad happened.
stevef1 Posted July 2, 2007 Author Posted July 2, 2007 Thanks for that, so the general opinion is to give them admin/power user access to the local computer, I guess some education needs to be done as most of the teaching staff are shocking when it comes to IT (a reluctance to learn in a learning environment) but giving them the rite to install drivers for home printers, USB devices etc seems to be the way to go. again thanks for all the great input stevef1
