This year ive moved everything over to Windows 7 and in the process upgraded to SmartNotebook 10.8

Previously, staff were able to navigate their computer using the smart board as soon as windows boots.

Now, since the update / move to Win7 the whiteboard doesn't become interactive until they remove a pen from the tray. This then enables them to navigate windows explorer etc.

I dont and never have had smart-board tools load at startup, but even starting the tools doesn't allow the boards to interact until a pen is lifted from the tray...

Is this normal behaviour now, or am I missing something?

I can confirm this isn't normal. You should still be able to use the board with your finger as well as a pen or eraser. I would suggest you look at the advanced options just in case an option is disabled.

Ok, had some time to look into this a bit further.

Ive upgraded smart notebook / tools to version 11 and I still have the same problem.

However, the problem isnt there with the administrator account, so its only going wonky on staff accounts. So, ive given the staff full permissions on the SMART folder in c:\Program Files and also given them full permissions to both the smart technologies folders in the registry settings. Still the same problem...

Anyone got any ideas?

I had this issue with one of the older SMART boards with Notebook 11. Now like yourself I had no idea what was causing it. What actually fixed it was not even close to what I'd of imagined. Just out of interest I removed the USB Cable that detects the board, restarted the machine without the USB connected, allowed the PC to boot back up, plugged the USB back in, it picked the board up straight away and then restarted again. This for some reason fixed it? I have no idea why or how?! Worth a try if your really stumped I suppose.

thanks for the suggestion, just tried and its still the same...

Im heading down this possibly being a permissions / profile issue as the administrator user can use it fine...

Sounds like a strange one, weird how it still didn't work after you gave full permission to all staff over the "SMART" folders and it was still kicking up a fuss. Have you consulted SMART about the issue? Never had to contact them directly so I don't know what the service is like.

right, looks like its an issue to do with my staff profiles / settings...

The board behaves fine using both an Administrator account and a Student account..

So, where should i start looking?

Going to go through the GPO's tomorrow and see if there is anything obvious in the staff settings that could cause it

We had the same problem with the SmartBoards - check your GPOs - User Config | Policies | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Tablet PC | Touch Input | Turn off Tablet PC touch input - make sure this is either off or not configured.

Worked perfectly - Thanks!
