[ms office - 2007] Spell checker only works when menu is pressed

Here's an interesting one for you.

 

I can't work it out for the life of me, but in Word 2007 our ICT teachers have mentioned that spell check isn't automatically kicking in.

 

I've been in and checked all the settings, and automatic spell checking is enabled, however the interesting part is that as soon as I click the menu icon, spell check springs to life.

 

Has anyone ever had this happen to us? It's not specific to a certain machine, and we've just installed SP3 just in case but it's still happening.
