I've got a couple of devices transmitting VGA over Cat5 so I know it works.

 

My question is can I broadcast it over switches. I am anticipating having to set up a seperate VLAN for the signal but was wondering if I could connect the source into a switch and have it communicatie with a device elsewhere. Additionally if that's possible is it possible to have a number of destinations? i.e. I have a single source broadcasting and then 4 converters scatter around the school to pick up the signal and drive a number of displays.

Yes is can be done but depends on your current devices.

 

If they are just using the cat5 to carry the analogue vga signal this will not travel over an ip network it's just using the cabling as an extension you need to convert the vga to an ip stream with active hardware that supports it.

We have single source broadcasting to 4 TV's using this and it works fine. We don't however go through a switch so I wouldn't know about that sorry.

 

That device just uses the cabling as an extension and won't work over a switch.

You want VGA over IP. VGA over ethernet/cat5 [cable] is just that, the signal transmitted over a cat cable instead of a VGA cable, nothing magic about it. As the signal isn't ethernet data packets they can't traverse a switch.

You'd need to use vlc or similar to create a compressed video stream, and then run a computer at all the end points to decode it, raspberry pi or similar would make it cheap enough. Really every projector/display installed these days should have an ethernet port and a raspberry pi attached.

Why do you need to go through a switch? If the signal's good enough and the runs not too long, can't you just connect patch panel to patch panel?
