I spent ages fiddling on with our old smoothwall box to make sure the site worked an eventually ended up allowing all of the following: mt4.google.com gstatic.com mt2.google.com cbk0.google.com gg.google.com gmodules.com gg.google.co.uk maps.google.co.uk cbk2.google.com mt0.google.com mt1.google.com cbk1.google.com maps.google.com mw2.google.com googleapis.com mt3.google.com mt5.google.com cbk3.google.com That worked fine. So now we've moved onto a new smoothwall G3 box, so I copy that rule over, and bingo! google maps fails all over again! the usual 'Loading' message that hangs up. So my now working policies don't work - anyone got an example policy to get google maps working through guardian 3?
AngryTechnician Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 I've never had to make any special provision for Google Maps on our Smoothwall G3. It just works for us. Do you have other Google services blocked by default?
Sheridan Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 (edited) Nope - our g3 is a lot less complex in the way policies are set up - basic blocking for students, less so for staff, and slightly less again for admins! Edit: Its the old 'Object expected' error again. Thats rendered google maps unusable several times in the past. All smoothwall shows is Allow entries but the user gets the error in the status bar and the damn 'Loading' message Now to educate users that bing maps is in fact 100 times better.... Sheridan Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 I shouldn't even need to whitelist anything related to google maps by the sound of it. I've also tried disabling the Core Blocked content and Recommended Security rules temporarily but its still the same. The logs show no blocked sites, and even when whitelisted the sites simply show in the logs as matching the rules. I've even compared the logs from the old working g2 box to the g3 and the content being requested/allowed is the same. Looks like I'll have to bring the old G2 box back online!
tom_newton Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 You certainly shouldn't need to whitelist anything. It's generally pretty well behaved especially on the desktop.
Sheridan Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 Well G3 is definitely doing something to block it - I've put everyone back onto our old g2 box and its all working fine again. The g3 logs aren't showing anything to work on though!

Ashm Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Check your content modification policies. I had some issues with Google Maps a few months back and I think it was either the SafeSearch or Recommended Security rules policy that was causing the problem. Try disabling some of them to see if it helps, if so create a custom rule with the URLs to exclude then add to the top of the policy list.

Sheridan Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 (edited) Got very little enabled now! Still hangs. Bizarrely the 'embedded' google maps you see on some websites seem to work OK. I've got an open case with smoothwall but no response yet. Edit - well call me a liar. As soon as I posted that I went to try again and its working. I've made no changes since last Friday and its now working. I'll seem if its still working tomorro! Edited November 19, 2012 by Sheridan
Sheridan Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 Failed again, along with the https errors and now authentication exceptions failing I've reverted back to the g2 box which is working fine. Disappointed no response from my support request to smoothwall after 4 days!
