Deploying printer by Group Policy to certain PCs

Hi all,

 

Server 2008 R2 with XP clients.

 

I have installed several printers on to the server, shared them out and ensured the "list in directory" is ticked.

 

I want printer1 to be available only on PCs 1-10 and then printer2 on PCs 11-20 when the user logs in.

 

So I created a room1 ou and assigned a group policy to it and then put PCs 1-10 in there.

 

I configured the printers under user configuration and computer coniguration, but it just wont add them when the user logs in.

 

Client side extension is installed.

 

Any thoughts?

Are you using User configuration>Prefrences>control panel settings>printers

adding the printers there and then common tab and ticking item level targeting and selecting the group of the room.

 

I've done mine all under a user config, so that when people log on they get a printer depending on what group its in.

Just a heads up on the config. I have Staff and Student OU's with policies assigned to them.

 

I have added all rooms PCs to their own room ou and giving each room a group.

 

For the student policy I have configured it as you mentioned above. I have selected "update" (or should it be create?) and selected to add shared printer from server. I take it I need to do this for every shared printer?

 

and then for each printer select the appropiate printer room group via item level targeting?

Create seems to be the best option. i suppose it depends on how you do your user profiles. Mine delete once the user has logged out so create is the better option for me. Have a play and see what works best.

 

You need to add all of your shared printers under students and then as you say select the appropiate room group for it to be deployed to the correct machines.
