It had to happen. It simply had to happen. For it not to happen would be an impossibility.

Can guarentee that there was a *nix equivalent before this company existed... I'm pretty sure things like NeXTSTEP had interactive tiles, as well as ones reporting data back etc...

2011 is pretty recent, I can think of quite a few ideas where panels of live data are used before that time. SIMS Homepage is one of them.
