Hi all,

We are currently right in the middle of pushing out virtual machine on a citrix environment.

We have our first half a classroom virtualised, and we have hit a stumbling block.

It goes by the name of Adobe CS6!

When a kid trys to use photoshop the colours are off and it doesn't work properly, now with further investigation it's because the graphics aren't anywhere near good enough to run the software, so we need to do 'GPU Pass through' with a graphics card in the server.

All over citrix forums it says you need a physical graphics card PER VM!!???

We will be having over 600 VMs, I havn't started excreting servers or money so there is no way this is possible.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

UPDATE:

We may have jumped ahead on this one alittle but quickly.

On our master image photoshop works fine, but on the VM's the colour is off and it doesnt display correctly.

My take on things is either the drivers are wrong on the VMs or it has something to do with the buttons we 'switched' to make the vms quicker logging on, older windows shell e.t.c

Further investigation is commencing!!!

We use CS5 Photoshop with no problems on Citrix VDI, it was one of the tests we did in our Proof of concept.

No Special Graphics hardware, and the clients are either HP T5740's or 4320T (thin laptops)

And James, have you got off GIMP now then?

Still on there (was a pain to get through App-v but it works) but PhotoShop is soooo much more fun (through App-V as well).

WRT Adobe products and Terminal Servers or VDI - I had the impression (past licenses) explicitly excluded CS variants from running this way.

More on this thread:

Have they changed the licensing policy or are you just running it outside of their T+C's - I'd be grateful if someone could point to an update on their policy.

Care to link to somewhere that is says we can't run it in VDI...

If I could find it.... The OP in the other thread obviously did

I don't have CS6, is it in the license agreement?

I haven't seen anything that mentions we can't run it in VDI - some companies used to be quite nasty with TS/RDS but even a cursory glance of Google says nothing about it.

its ok. It's fixed now.

The license here: http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/pdfs/Photoshop_On_a_Server_Policy_5-31-2011.pdf is significantly different to the CS2 or whatever version that said NO to citrix TS environments.

nterpretation

Customers who choose to deploy Photoshop in a server based environment, must acquire

the appropriate number of licenses for all desktop machines and users that can connect and

access the software/functionality deployed on the server. Customers do not need to

purchase an additional Photoshop license for the server.

Hosted server software (e.g., Citrix)

Photoshop may be installed and used on hosted server software server for direct usage by

end users (no automated, programmatic, or scripted usage or other restrictions as stated in

the EULA) so long as each individual named user with access to the application must have a

license. (For example - 100 named users have hosted server software access. Out of those

100 users, only 50 have access to the Photoshop application. This would require 50

Photoshop licenses.)

Licenses are intended to be fixed NOT concurrent. In other words, you can’t remove access

for one user in order to give that access to a different user and then return access back to

the original user. Users should be static. Notwithstanding the foregoing, permanent

switchovers are acceptable (i.e., an employee has left the company). No sharing of a single

hosted server software ID is allowed. Each End User must have his own unique login to

hosted server software to use Photoshop. No usage in which the user population would be

uncountable. (For example – no use of a shared ID that allows multiple people to log into a

shared hosted server software account to use Photoshop. This would create an uncountable

user population).

The customer does not need to purchase a license for the hosted server software.

I guess this would exclude home access though.

Yeah I think at the first instance Adobe didn't allow their product to work on VDI, but the licence has been changed now so you can.

With alittle help of regedit of course ;)
