10.8 Server App and Profile Manager

I'm after some help and advice on the above topic.

 

I have just done a fresh install of Mountain Lion along with OSX Server. I have configured OD etc and then bound server to AD.

 

When I go into the server app, I can see all my AD users and groups (and who is in those groups) so my mac server can see AD etc.....

 

When I go into Profile Manager, I can see my AD users and groups, but Profile Manager tells me there are no members in my AD groups, eventhough the server app can see them.

 

Has anyone come across this before and if so, is this normal or is somthing not quite right?

I have an open case with AppleCare support about this issue. They told me the engineers are working on resolving this issue but they have no ETA on a workaround or a patch. If you try to apply settings to your AD groups, they will not take effect. If you try to create an OD group and nest an AD group in it, then apply settings to the OD group, it will still not take effect. This makes Profile Manager useless to us. We will be using Workgroup Manager until we hear back from them. Edited October 23, 2012 by -Tim

Thanks for the update, I was beginning to wonder if I was going insane.

 

Looks like I'll use workgroup manager until Apple get their act together.

I'd advise you do that too mdrabble - I tried setting up Profile Manager a while ago, and simply could not get it to work correctly with an AD + OD + Profile Manager setup over a typical school connection, even with all the right ports open etc...

 

Workgroup Manager just works IMO.

Completely agree that profile manager is a bit hit and miss at the moment and workgroup manager is what I recommend and still install now a days.

Presumable I create a group within LDAP, nest the AD group within the newly created LDAP group so I can manage settings etc?

Yup, in OD you build whatever groups you want, and add the AD users/groups to it. Simple as that.

This issue has been resolved with update 2.2 to Server.app.

 

About the OS X Server v2.2 Update

 

"Adds the ability to use Active Directory groups with Profile Manager."
