I have been testing this off and on since last summer. They have not provided good support for integrating with Active Directory user groups. Each update states that they fixed the issue but it will still not work for me.

Do you use Workgroup Manager to manage settings on your iMacs? You can import the Google Chrome application in the details pane. Then create these new keys: Action on startup - integer - 4 URLs to open on startup - array - 1 item 0 - string - This allowed us to show a homepage to all users when they open Chrome instead of prompting them to log into their Google account.

When you hold option and get to the boot options screen that only displays the hard drive, do you then press the "N" key to access network boot options? Some models will not show the network options in the initial boot options menu.

We have it installed on the teacher's Mac in each computer lab. We have not found a way to give each teacher access to a preconfigured ARD list when they login with their own Active Direcotry credentials. Instead, depending on the lab, they either login to a local account or a generic AD account on which I have set up ARD with that computer lab's computer list and an ARD password that only some teachers know.

We have the same issue. A user does not need local admin rights to pause a printer but a user does need local admin rights to resume a printer. That is a flaw that I have been waiting for them to fix since 10.5. It can also be caused by an issue with the printer at the time a user prints from a certain Mac. If the printer is out of ink or has a paper jam, the Mac will pause the printer until the issue is resolved. The only fixes I have read sounded too complicated on a large scale considering how relatively infrequent this happens.

Does anyone have a good solution to manage software updates on a large group of iMacs? We are currently using software update service on OSX Server 10.8 and ARD to send the "Install all software updates" Unix command to all of the iMacs at once. With any version changes to OSX, dozens of iMacs get hung up on the next restart and have to be powered off manually. We would like to avoid this issue and also take a more automated approach. Ideally, the Macs would just subscribe to the update server, check for updates and install on a restart that could be scheduled overnight.

Go to Preferences -> Printing -> Footer Tab and check Print Page Footer.

We prefer to lock everything down with workgroup manager instead of imaging periodically or freezing the home directory. We do image once or twice per year to give the iMacs a fresh start.

After you bind a Mac to Open Directory, it does not automatically appear in OD as it would in Active Directory. You have to create a manual entry for the computer record and enter the MAC address of the Mac. Then either apply settings to the computer record or create a group record, add the computer record as a member, and apply settings to the computer group.

"Create New Keychain" will work if your students do not use their keychain to store passwords. If they use their keychain, they will need to update their keychain instead. Their old password should be used to do this. If it does not work, the most likely reason is that they do not remember their old password.

There are no compatibility issues between WGM on OSX Snow Leopard and clients running Lion or Mountain Lion. If and when you upgrade to Profile Manager, that is only compatible with clients that are on Lion or Mountain Lion. You can also upgrade your server to 10.8 and still run WGM without issue.

This issue has been resolved with update 2.2 to Server.app. About the OS X Server v2.2 Update "Adds the ability to use Active Directory groups with Profile Manager."

I have an open case with AppleCare support about this issue. They told me the engineers are working on resolving this issue but they have no ETA on a workaround or a patch. If you try to apply settings to your AD groups, they will not take effect. If you try to create an OD group and nest an AD group in it, then apply settings to the OD group, it will still not take effect. This makes Profile Manager useless to us. We will be using Workgroup Manager until we hear back from them.

Ports 2195,2196, and 5223 will need to have access to 17.0.0.0/8 outbound to the internet. Make sure any network firewalls in place allow those ports out.

I am about to migrate from Workgroup Manager to Profile Manager and I wanted to see if anyone is currently using Profile Manager with an Open Directory replica. Our current OD server does not have a replica but we are going to replace it with two Mac Mini servers. I have not set up a replica before and I want to know if it provides redundancy and load balancing for Profile Manager and Workgroup Manager. Everything I am reading mentions about how it replicates OD. Does it also replicate WGM and PM settings/profiles or does it only replicate only users, groups, user groups, and computer groups and the account settings?
