JMB Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Can anyone advise? Apple say this isn't covered by their warranty, and a replacement iPad 2 will cost £200. The store said you physically can't change the outer glass - it cannot be done, even by them, on account of how it's built. Yet you can buy these screens on Ebay for about £40. I don't mind tackling it myself, but can anyone confirm if it actually CAN be done?! Thanks!
Craig_W Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 (edited) I replaced one recently on an iPad 3, but needed to carefully use a heat gun all around the edge of the glass to soften the glue, the screen will then pull off. Does get more awkward with shattered bits of glass stuck to the glue. Apply heat in quick bursts whilst inserting something thin between the glass and body. Took some time a patience but once I had completed it you couldnt notice. Our warranty is now void on this device though Edited October 19, 2012 by Craig_W
tomgrindle Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 The same happened to mine a few months ago when I dropped it on a brick paved drive. Apple also quoted me the same price. I have looked into doing myself .. its didn't look very easy, but manageable, I just wouldn't be comfortable. I would rather pay the £200 and have a new one than have a stab myself and then break the iPad even more and not have one at all :/
LeMarchand Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 *CAUTION! SEXIST SOLUTION, BUT IT WORKED* This happened at one of my schools, and I suggested that the (young, blond, pretty) teacher fluttered her eyelashes in the Apple Store but she admirably decided to buy a glass screen from eBay. When she couldn't fit it (don't know why she didn't ask me to have a go) she took it to the Apple Store and went with my plan and left with a new official Apple screen fitted. This was the last but one model, though.
