Haptic Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Random one, if 'I had a friend' that didn't actually own a copy of DAY-Z but is strangely addicted to watching decent clips of it (Mainly Sacriel's - superb narrative) would that make him weird? Bearing in mind he's always been an avid gamer until a small bundle of joy put the kibosh on his controller wielding glory days. Somehow watching other people playing at a high level is giving just enough of a fix, good squad comms, tactics and cracking snipes. Or am I just old/weird? (ahem err my friend that is..) familiarrealms Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 This is a good question. I watch Day-z Videos all the time purely because I love zombie survival games. Also because i cant afford to get a decent PC to run it. This could well be the reason so i wouldn't say its weird. As a serious gamer (mainly console), i enjoy watching people playing games on youtube, watching walkthroughs, COD montages etc so if gaming is his passion i would not say its strange. 1
Haptic Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Good call! +1 for normalcy I'm feeling better already
CAM Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Heh I think Sacriel is on my subscribe list too. Day-Z is one of those games I find more fun to watch then play. 1
featured_spectre Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Not weird at all...though your controller wielding days can be sorted by sorting a schedule out...perhaps an hour in the evening before bed? DayZ is awful though, just awful...bunch of noobs teamkilling me 1
Geoff Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) I think I watch more of this kind of thing than actually television programming. You should check out YouTube and twitch.tv there are a vast amount of people making a living from streaming/videoing their gaming sessions and posting the resulting videos on the internet. Just Google YouTube for 'Lets Play' or browse twitch.tv for a little while. Granted it's not something everyone can do, I think you need a certain type of personality and a lot of dedication to do it to the point where you are successful and have a regular viewer base. The elephant in the room for this sort of discussion is eSports. For example, check this out for crowds. Edited October 15, 2012 by Geoff 1
familiarrealms Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 One of the best ones out there at the moment is a guy called Toby Turner, Tobuscus on Youtube. He adds a great bit of comedy to it all as well. Keep an eye out for him at gaming conventions and other nerdy meetings he is normally at them. He also represented Ubisoft at E3 this year so he is quite a big deal. I recommend his "lets Play" of Dead Island, its hilarious.
Haptic Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Day-Z is one of those games I find more fun to watch then play. Please tell me there's no other examples of vouyer worthwhile games? I can see the little bit of free time I get disappearing further....
aerospacemango Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) I'm sorry....but I think you're ALL a little bit weird for watching, rather than playing! Give me a spare hour and it's back to Half Life 2 and running around killing things! Wouldn't catch me watching on youtube....even if I could remember the names to subscribe to.... *runs off to youtube to subscribe!!! Edited October 15, 2012 by aerospacemango
familiarrealms Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 LOL. Mr Freeman and his funky Weezer style glasses. Gotta watch gaming videos on Youtube, especially if you want to re-live timeless classics that you can't get anymore or new releases that you cant yet afford. Sometime you have to watch them because they are too difficult to play. Anyone play DemonSouls?? Can't do it? Watch it on youtube.
bushby Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 im an avid gamer and i dont watch tv now because there is twich.tv and youtube and they are both good if you need that "fix" for a while like at th weekend wanted to play zelda but couldnt find my n64 controller so watched it insted XD
Geoff Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) Please tell me there's no other examples of vouyer worthwhile games? I can see the little bit of free time I get disappearing further.... Well here's a few YouTube channels I watch: Let's Get On With It! - YouTube Winning Is For Losers. - YouTube YOGSCAST Lewis & Simon - YouTube Jesse Cox, he's hip to the kids! Nagidal's Let's plays - YouTube Storytime with Plump... - YouTube As I said, it's down to the presentation by the streamer. It doesn't matter how awful the game is if the person doing the video does it in an entertaining way. For example: Edited October 15, 2012 by Geoff
Haptic Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Give me a spare hour and it's back to Half Life 2 and running around killing things! *runs off to youtube to subscribe!!! yeah like you didnt search for a walkthrough first time the antlions took a chunk outta your crowbar!
arwen Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Nope, not weird at all. Why do you think there are so many clips on youtube of folk playing games? ;-) In the days before youtube, when Resident Evil came out my brother would sit in the middle of the room playing it, with my other brother, some of their friends and me all watching. With pop corn and the lights out. Much better than just watching a film! 1
aerospacemango Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 yeah like you didnt search for a walkthrough first time the antlions took a chunk outta your crowbar! Whoa there! That's a huge slur against my games-playing abilities!! But, despite that, it's weird that you quote the part of the game that I've just gone through!! Those antlions are HARSH! I'd never have got through it, first time around, without a walkthr...... Oh...wait.....bugger!!! It IS surprising how much of the game one can remember over the years.... This time round, the antlions have been fairly straightforward! No hints needed here!!
X-13 Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 One of the best ones out there at the moment is a guy called Toby Turner, Tobuscus on Youtube. He adds a great bit of comedy to it all as well. I was going to suggest Tobuscus. He is funny, but sometimes I do wish he would just shut up. [Mainly because I'm trying to listen to a cutscene.] In the days before youtube, when Resident Evil came out my brother would sit in the middle of the room playing it, with my other brother, some of their friends and me all watching. With pop corn and the lights out. Much better than just watching a film! Urgh, backseat gamers.
LiamH Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 I'm pretty addicted to Yogscast, but it gives me an urge to fire up the game (minecraft for example)
aerospacemango Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Am I Weird? Good title for a thread, cos it allows for opening the subject up..... Thus, am I weird? I watch my stepson play Minecraft, and to be honest, I cannot see what all the fuss is about. Graphics are s**t, gameplay seems to be nigh on non-existent, except for run around building blocky things. Can anyone explain the attraction of playing a game that wouldn't look out of place in 1987?
familiarrealms Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 TO FIND DIAMONDS!!! TO MAKE A DIAMOND SWORD!!!! .....TO ENTER THE NETHER!!! its all very exciting
arwen Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Urgh, backseat gamers. Lol no, not like that. We are all gamers so there was no telling him what to do, unless he asked.

Can anyone explain the attraction of playing a game that wouldn't look out of place in 1987? Gameplay > Graphics (I could point to many, mostly indie games, that pull this off). Minecrafts specific gameplay hook is that it allows you to create. At its core it's basically a massive lego set and you can't lose or stand on any of the pieces.

Can anyone explain the attraction of playing a game that wouldn't look out of place in 1987? Digital lego! with zombies! and porkchops! It can actually be a quite technical game, which you might not see if your stepson is youngish and doesn't dabble into the redstone side of the game where you can make logic gates to power traps and doors. There are a fair few decent mods for it too, such as industrial craft that allow you to create complicated machines that ready do require some thought and planning.
Geoff Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Yeah then there's the whole minecraft mod scene that adds a whole extra layer of complexity
Haptic Posted October 16, 2012 Author Posted October 16, 2012 No hints needed here!! That was the main thing I loved about HL2 first time around, I spent ages barking up the wrong trees! Oh and the first time in Ravensholm.....gnarly. Never actually played the first HL (dodges cabbage) but I'm looking forward to the re-release Joe 'Combine Harvester' A
