I know it is a longshot but does anyone work on the Tremough campus or know anyone who does? My son is having some issues with his laptop - I have tried hard to sort it remotely but it is proving very difficult!

Thanks

I was hoping that one of the techs might be an edugeek and possibly be more inclined to help - the techs shouldnt really mend personal laptops.

Many years ago, I was in a pub in Looe and the TV reception was terrible. When someone commented on it, an old boy with weather-beaten features, in a thick roll neck jumper, took his pipe from his mouth and replied "Ahrrr, 'lectricity baint very good in Cornwall". Maybe that's the problem with the laptop. :)

When I was at Uni, IT Services did have a laptop clinic for students - has mini-witch enquired if such a thing exists

mini-mrwITch says not, although he is a bit un-techie (:ohwell:)

He says he has asked and as he seems to have a more complicated issue that isnt just a virus, they are not keen to get involved. He could be telling porkies.

Basically his computer keeps crashing and I had to send him a caddy so he could get his work off his hard drive. He managed that OK but now he is unable to boot from disk to reinstall windows. The screen just goes black after he presses any key to load from DVD, it never gets to 'windows is loading files'

I want him to reseat the RAM but he is a bit worried about doing it.

The annoying thing? It was doing it on and off all summer and I told him I would sort it if he just borrowed his sister's external HD and copy his files off. Did he? In three months? Course not!

I am sure the uni techies will reseat the RAM. At Lancaster the techies will do all sorts. They charge, but their charges seem reasonable. (Cheaper than me going up there if there's a problem :D)

I've stayed at that campus, it's a sports focused college IIRC so it's not very tech orientated. There's obviously on-site techs but I don't think they are geared up to do the kind of support you are looking for. Why doesn't he go down into Falmouth? I think there's a few computer repair type places scattered about?

Um, no it isn't. At least the Exeter Uni bit isnt. He is studying History and Politics.( It is a joint campus with the Arts University College). It is a bona fide part of Exeter Uni and covers most of the academic subjects done at Exeter, so it is quite tech.

Yes, he can go into Falmouth and get it sorted I am sure. But muggins here will have to pay for it and I was trying to find a cheaper way :)

My mistake, I stayed over the summer so everything was a bit quiet there (although a lot of the sport stuff was still going on) hence where I got the impression from.

Sorry, that would be great, but he isnt at University College Falmouth - that's the Arts University - he's at Exeter University, and never the twain shall meet I'm afraid!

Actually witch, I'll correct myself. The email address that Exeter give here for their students to contact is a falmouth.ac.uk one. So this must be one of the few services that is shared.

EDIT

Which you've realised too :)
