Source: The Exchange Team Blog Today we reached an important milestone in the development of the new Exchange. Moments ago, the Exchange engineering team signed off on the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. This milestone means the coding and testing phase of the project is complete and we are now focused on releasing the new Exchange via multiple distribution channels to our business customers. General availability is planned for the first quarter of 2013. We have a number of programs that provide business customers with early access so they can begin testing, piloting and adopting Exchange within their organizations: We will begin rolling out new capabilities to Office 365 Enterprise customers in our next service updates, starting in November through general availability. Volume Licensing customers with Software Assurance will be able to download Exchange Server 2013 through the Volume Licensing Service Center by mid-November. These products will be available on the Volume Licensing price list on December 1. Since announcing the Preview of the new Exchange back in July, the EHLO team has been actively blogging about the features and capabilities of the new Exchange. We’re excited to start getting the finished product into the hands of our customers!

If I get the okay on my plan next summer we're virtualising and moving to Exchange 2013, Office 2013 and first install of Sharepoint and possibly Lync. But who know's what will happen in the mean time............ 1

SYNACK Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Depends on when the RTM comes out, if it jumps out when I'm doing the EES server VM reshuffle (yay infinite datacentre licences) then 2013 it will be, no sense in installing old tech that I'll have to pull again in six months. So long as it is stable and there I'll jump on it. If it RTMs after that point it may wait till SP1 or so. The first SP is always a nightmare and it is easier to just install the slipstreamed SP1 version. Learnt that one from Exchange 2010, youch, get your updates together MS. I'd trust an RTM much more than the process of installing their latest SPs on stuff like Exchange, 30 min install time, 2 hours cleaning up the mess.

That far back there may be no migration path, 2003 to 2007 was easy, 2003 to 2010 was much less easy. They usually only support migrations a couple of levels back, you needed to upgrade to at least 2003 to get to 2010 so you may need to do the intermediary anyway.

The clients I look after use to have remote exchange servers, but they found these 2 restrictive, costs on bandwith, so it was decided to bring it back in house. This is happening with more than just exchange, I remember the days when oh yeah lest move it offsite save cash... Now people have worked out it wasn’t a good as they thought it would be its now all been moved back to local servers, with the likes of VMWare, and I hate to say it, Hyper V *Yuk* its much cheaper, and makes more sense.

We also have rubbish unreliable expensive bandwidth, not using a local Exchange severs is 'madness', it's not like they are hard to manage and at multiple 1gbs links I defy anyone to provide better bandwidth for $80 per 1gb link perpetual.
