gb managed switches

doing dev plan for admin network and one of things going to do is replace the nast hubs with gb switches.

 

first question due to cost is worrth us doing one as managed the backbone as to say and then the second one that connects to it as unmanaged or should we do both as managed.

 

second anyone recoomend any cheap decent managed gb switches..

The HP Procurve range are excellent and I'd also consider 3com. Both are cheap/cheapest if you choose the right options.

 

Had D-Link in the past and wouldn't recommend those. No problem with the company as such, just not the quality/ reliability of the others.

 

We went for a huge chassis box at the core. Slightly problematic as we soon outgrew it. Would therefore recommend the modular approach. But saying that the HP chassis switch looks very arttractive.

 

With core switches dual PSU's is a must too.

personally, i would go for a managed solutuion, but i wouldnt put in GBit to GBit, id drop something like a Dell PowerConnect 5324 for the backbone switch then link it to some 3424s or 3448s

 

You get GBit backbone and GBit uplinks to each switch with 100mbit to the desktop, i currently have a similar but more dated (5224 and 3348s) running on cat5(!) running at full speed. Had a few probs with STP but after i ironed out the misconfiguration it now runs smooth as, and its quick as buggery too (regularly doin 50-80MBit to servers during working hours on large files etc) with very very low latency (usually the servers are creaking before the LAN does)

 

If Dell isnt your cup of tea, take a look at HPs procurve kit, i personally have never used it but have seen a lot of reccomendations here and elsewhere.

Work well - they're not as configurable as some, but the useful stuff is in there without being complicated.

looked at HP Procurve seem good mainly wanted an idea so can get some prices down on paper.

 

also anything should be inc in this plan any government ideas being planned when it comes to admin network so can add those in.

I use Netgear 24 port GB switches at my endpoints (training rooms etc) and they are smashing and have not fallen over once. They are unmanaged, but as an endpoint there would be little point in having them managed anyway.
