[sims] SIMs - Upgrading every launch

Hey,

 

One of the primaries near us are having a problem where SIMs will try to upgrade everytime it's launched. Even though the update installs and works first time it still tries to do it again.

 

Is there some file or sonething that is checked to see if an update is needed and may not be being created correctly?

 

Or any thoughts?

What operating system is it? Can you see the shared drive?

You could try renaming the simsload.ini in the SIMS programfiles folder.

You can bypass the upgrade running everytime by just using the shortcut to the SIMS application. This can be done by running pulsar.exe from {windows dir}\program files\SIMS\SIMS .net

 

Note if you do this then it will not look for an update and if the server has been updated then SIMS will not run.

 

You need to be sure that all clients are on the latest version for this to work.

Yep, it will be the simsload if it keeps trying to upgrade, it checks for the file version of simsapplicationsetup in simsload.ini so if it hasn't been updated due to permissions then it will keep trying. Most likely the install also just says 'skipping' a lot as it's already been done before. I would sort out the permissions rather than bypass simsload.exe .

Permissions, but i thought we'd sorted your permissions out in that other thread. Make sure they have permission to all the relevant folders.

Sounds like permissions but not sure what you mean by get it to work.. assume someone has mentioned simsperm.bat in the other thread vikpaw mentions?

Normally find the re-occuring updates is either permissions or the sims.ini has the wrong SIMSDirectory= set.

Mmm, Renamed the ini and it created a fresh one, and still does it. So it has permissions to write to it.

 

It's also updating correctly (on the first update), so can see shares etc.

 

Will try to check out the permissions, and ini settings bit further and see if I'm missing something.

Which ini did you delete?

Can you manually read the simsload.ini file and check the simsapplicationssetup version number, if it doesn't match the version number of said file in setups directory, that might do it.

The SIMsLoad.ini (The one that stores file versions in). Checked the version in the newly created ini and it's the same as the server. Which in my books means no reason for it to upgrade....

 

Will have to take another look in the morning and see if I'm missing something obvious.

Hmm, try Matt's suggestion, it could be looking at another folder, and picking up the wrong file version. Changed server install lately?

Is it definitely the workstation element (specifically simsapplicationsetup) it's trying to run each time? It's not one of the other ones it trying to run each time?
