Exchange 2010

Hi,

 

I'm wondering if someone could provide me with some assistance on this. I am planning on carrying out a migration from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010. Currently we have a 2008R2 domain with exchange 2003. I have created a new VM with VMware and want to make a start on the installation of exchange 2010 now but the migration of mailboxes and settings from exchange 2003 will not take place until half term.

 

Will there be any implications of me doing this? or can I do all the setup apart from the data migration without it disrupting anything else?

You can add Exchange 2010 Server in the mix with your current Exchange 2003 Infrastructure, nothing will change and mail will continue to use the Rules/Connectors on Exchange 2003. You will be able to view your Legacy Mailboxes and Settings from Exchange 2010 Management Console too. (but changes are limited) - You can setup your exchange 2010 server, configure your required settings.. do test migrations if you so wish and then move them all over during half term.

When you go through the setup, you'll notice it picks up your current exchange 2003 servers. :-)

Just having a go at this now and would you believe it it failed the checks. Turns out our exchange 2003 server is not up to SP2 level!! I'll have to get that upgraded first.

I would recommend you use this tool (Exchange Server Deployment Assistant) which will give you the steps in which you need to follow! ;-) including the pre-requisits!

Running into trouble with the checks when preparing legacy permissions. The error I am getting now is about the recipient being authoritive or non-authoritive? any ideas on what could be causing this?

So, There will be a send connector configured that sends email to EXCH2010 for users whom have mailboxes on that server. I think you need to ensure that such accepted domain is an internal relay so that email is routed to exchange organization outside of your current exchange organization.

I have managed to get Exchange 2010 installed on a new server and it has picked up all the settings from our legacy exchange 2003 box. I have tested a mailbox move which went through successfully and I can send emails from it but cannot receive.

 

Is there anything I should be checking?, everyone on Exchange 2003 is sending and receiving ok but this test mailbox I moved doesn't receive anything.

 

The domains are the same, user accounts the same.

 

Any ideas?

I seem to able to email myself also but just cannot receive anything from anybody else either internally or externally. I have followed that guide to a T but still, I want to make sure that when I do migrate all the accounts they are immediately able to send and receive emails, based on this test mailbox move there is an issue with receiving that I could do with resolving sooner rather than later.

I think the problem is with the routing group connector between the two exchange servers as if I have a look at the connector in ESM in 2003 I can see all the messages that have failed to reach me and they sit there saying pending and retrying.

ok, we had a problem with mcaffee stopping emails on the server, but may not be that. i'd take a look at the receive connector on the exchange 2010 server under server config/ hub transport. i'd also take a look at the relay settings on exchange 2003.

thats is exactly the same problem we had. try disabling the antivirus and see if they then send.

No joy with this I'm afraid. I even tried disabling the Windows Firewall but still doesn't work. Just refusing to pass the email on from our 2003 box to 2010. Edited October 4, 2012 by Badaz52

have you checked the permission groups on the exchange 2010 recieve connector? i'm assuming there are no event logs showing a problem?

You are an absolute legend mate. That post led me to some information about the SMTP smart host information and yes indeed we had a smart host configured on our E2K3 server and an internet mail connector. I removed the smart host info from the SMTP virtual server and bingo emails came flooding through.

And I'm back again lol. Sending and receiving emails between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 mailboxes now no problem since removing that smart host entry on the SMTP virtual server. Unfortuantely now I cannot send emails to anyone outside of the organisation. We have an internet mail connector on the exchange 2003 box and I can see Exchange 2003 pass it the emails through the queues but after trying and trying it drops into the messages queued for deferred delivery box.
