sLiDeR Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Hi, new to this game!! I need to create an image and multicast it to machines. Now I know I install Ghost to server, but having trouble getting the ghost console to pick up client machines. They are new laptops & although they pick up IP, they obviously aren't attached to the domain. Is that why do you think?? Any pointers would be most helpfull & appreciated. Also, anything you think I should make sure of on the actual image would be a tremendous help!! Thank you.

It sounds like you haven't set up a session to connect to and so although your clients are getting an IP they aren't actually involved in any kind of transaction with Ghost itself. Set up a session in your Ghostcast application window, define a name for the session and point to where you want the image stored (and give the image a name), then make sure you have selected the radio button "upload image" (this might vary depending on your version). Click "accept clients" and then run off to your client and use your Ghost boot floppies to connect to the session. You don't need your clients attached to the domain, and running Sysprep before uploading the image should make sure that when the image is used to install clients they get a unique SID from Setupcl.exe. What you put in your images is a matter of choice: we make sure all updates are on there, that they have things like Flash Player and Adobe Reader, but that's about it. Prism does the rest for us post-install. However, you can put all your applications on there (I know some who do this); just make sure you realise the image size increases when you do this (though this is probably obvious). HTH Paul
sLiDeR Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Thanks for your advice mate. Ive now got the console talking to the PC. I have successfully cloned & deployed an image to a laptop. My problem now is im trying to do it via the ghost console rather than the ghostcast server. Doing it that way, the console can configure the sysprep utility. However, when I try to grab the image, the console reports back that it couldnt copy the sysprep file over to the client. My routine was the run the sysprep setupmanager on the client machine, copied the sysprep file onto a key & placed it on the server with the ghost console. This was so that when configuring the sysprep utility on the ghost console, it required the file. Help please???
acrobson Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Me and my team did a massive Research and Development with deployment of Ghost and sysprep, we are currently implementing the structure to assist with BSF etc. I will see what reports i can dig out and PM you.

I'd be really interested in a copy of that too - if you wouldn't mind. Thanks in advance

StewartKnight Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 can you not post it to the wiki, because I'd like a look too, I just purchased Ghost Solution Suite 2 a couple of weeks ago, and I'd like a decent guide!

ICTNUT Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 hmmm this is something I need to look at, I have rolled out 2x Thin Client to about 40 + Pc's and this has impacted on my RIS setup. I want to look at ghost corporate (I already have a copy) to wiz images out to PC's but my question is this, having never used this before does it rely on DHCP like RIS?? or does it use it's own method of grabbing clients? Next does anyone know of a definitive guide to getting it to work, at the moment I used RIS to do Vanilla XP SP2 installs and then scripting/GPO topush apps out, as each IT suite contains the same make/model/revision of PC i would be nice to grab an image of a single pre built PC and zap it to all the others. Any pointers would be good...!

Any pointers would be good...!When we do ghost casting we use either floppies or more commonly USB boot sticks, we then assigned each boot stick with it's own static IP and labelled each stick, this way, if there are any errors etc you don't have to restart the whole session until the rogue is found. The boot stick which we use is a multi platform boot stick which workd for about 90% off the network cards out there (All dell and HP's, thats fo sure!).
kingswood Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 We used to carry out ghost installs with boot floppies but I have recently changed that so that we utilise PXE on the clients to start a ghost session over RIS. Much better- and no need to carry around floppies etc. I am also looking at a single ghost image for all systems- rather than a specific image for each room (since we use Prism to deploy applications post-install this isn't that much of a deal). I am now looking into WDS- but this won't come for a few months yet.

Thankfully, each suite has all of the same model, so if we do do a suite at a time, they can all be done at the same time etc D
kingswood Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 That's an excellent idea actually. We use mainly Dell Optiplex too- so it shouldn't be too hard to roll all the drivers in. Cool.

Cool. This is what our mulit boot hybrid is configured to support, all from one memory stick/Floppy Disk! ICTNUT Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 @acrobson: I would be intrested in knowing more about your setup especially the boot stick option, this would allow me to be able to use our dhcp for thin client fully. The RIS option as noted about does not work for me or at least Ihave not managed to get it ot work. Do you have a boot stick for each PC?? I have close to 550 thats alot of sticks ;-)

The RIS option as noted about does not work for me or at least Ihave not managed to get it ot work. Do you have a boot stick for each PC?? I have close to 550 thats alot of sticks ;-)As each boot stick has it's own static IP address you can only use that boot stick with that IP one at a time per session, however we only have suites of up to 50 machines, therefore all we did was buy 50 of the cheapest 63mb memory sticks and used them, the boot stick's are all configured the same, except you give each a static IP address from your DHCP scope and take them out of use. I also advise labelling each stick with its static IP address as if there is a failure the ghostcast server will tell which IP address it is, then you can just remove that stick if it becomes faulty at any point. Mind, it does take approx 3 minutes per stick to get the point of use, however, this is time well spent when all factors of ghostcasting are considered, especially when like me, you have been ghosting for coming onto 5 years within education! I hope that is of some help
ICTNUT Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 thanks it has given me something to think about. I may be abck with some more questions though ;-)
