IT_Man_Dan Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Afternoon all, I was wondering if any of you would know what GPO could be stopping pdf's downloading/opening in IE9? Basically when our exams officer is logged in she can't open/download pdf's within the browser. This is happening on the edexcelonline website. Yet when I logon (administrator) it works fine so it definately is a rights issue. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Dan
VeryPC_Tom_M Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I'd check the User Configuration - Administrative Templates - System - Run only allowed Windows Applications setting. If it's enabled and the software you're using to view PDFs is not listed, then it won't be run on opening PDFs.
dhoward_westexetc Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 (edited) I had the same issue on student accounts (limited), it's when PDFs do not appear in the IE 9 browser for some reason. Happens even with no policies attached! In the end I put in a workaround to deploy the DWORD value bBrowserIntegration, value 0, to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals. It makes it open PDFs in the application itself, which works fine. @IT_Man_Dan - what version of Adobe Reader are you running? We are running 9.5.2. Want to know if this happens on Adobe Reader X? And if anyone finds out the ultimate cause and fix for 9.5.2 - that would be better still! Edited September 14, 2012 by dhoward_westexetc added ultimate cause and fix
Pudding Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 IT_Man_Dan did you find the cause of this issue? We have the same thing here. PDF's on other sites open fine just not those from edexcelonline. The Exams Officer is still using IE8 on XP (although the same thing happens on all our Windows7/IE9 machines). The site worked last term but not now and, and like most exams organisations (in my experience) Edexcel don't really want to know.
IT_Man_Dan Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 Hi Pudding, Nope I'm afraid I haven't solved it yet. To be honest I haven't had chance to look into it further yet. I'll let you know when I solve it. Regards Dan
IT_Man_Dan Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 @dhoward_westexetc We are using 9.5.2 also :-/

IT_Man_Dan Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 Good morning all, I've got it working :-) The settings that were stopping it were under: User configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Explorer Control Panel > Advanced I had various settings configured in this section to do with not allowing software to run with invalid signature etc. I removed (set a lot to 'Not configured') and now users can open/save PDF's etc with no problems. Sorry I didn't make a note of what exact settings were set as I removed them all at the same time. The only settings I have configured under the tab now is: Do not allow resetting Internet Explorer settings Enabled Turn off Profile Assistant Enabled I hope this helps. Dan
Oaktech Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Also, I think you might need to uncheck the 'save encrypted pages to disk' box under advanced in IE, this has prevented our exams officer from opening outcome of appeal letters from edexcel.
Pudding Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Our problem was the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". Although I don't know why it has only now become a problem as we hadn't changed the setting recently.
dhoward_westexetc Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) Disabling do not save encrypted pages to disk did not fix it for us On our Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Advanced we have the following: - Do not allow resetting Internet Explorer settings to enabled - Do not save encrypted pages to disk - disabled. - Empty Temporary Internet files when the browser is closed - enabled. I put back the temporary registry preference I set to add the bBrowserIntegration value which put back my workaround. Edited September 26, 2012 by dhoward_westexetc
