ZeroHour Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) It appears to be live now on parts of microsoft.com. They dont explain what the yellow colour is supposed to represent but blue is Windows, red is Office and green is Xbox. Thoughts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzkZWvAJUr0&feature=player_embedded Edited August 23, 2012 by ZeroHour
mdench Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Whats the sudden obsession with clip art style boxes?
SYNACK Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Oh they are really pushing the bounds now, four whole coloured squares. How many business majors did it take to come up with that one?
localzuk Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 They've obviously got a 4 year old in charge of their marketing department. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, recognises the wavey Microsoft flag. It is stylised and has a distinct look. 4 squares? Not unique, not special and not going to impress anyone.
Steve21 Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Can I work for MS now? When it takes 5 minutes to copy a logo with paint, you know there's something wrong Steve
AMLinington Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) It looks like the sort of logo you make in a hurry using drawing objects in word to represent the windows logo when your mad skillz in paint don't quite stretch to a wavy flag... The flag is iconic and as familar and loved as the Apple fruit and the Linux Penguin... When I ride into battle against the segway-mounted Apple corps waving my sharpened array of restore cds I'm going to want my battle standard to inspire my bloodlust. Not hang stiffly from the flagpole like a fridge-mounted primary-school-childs painting. Bad form MS. Bad form. Edited again to add: The Yellow represents the gold in Bill Gates' money tower. Picture Bill Gates instead of Scrooge McDuck and you get the idea... Edited August 23, 2012 by AMLinington
cpjitservices Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Hmmmm have yet to figure out what the yellow square is representing.....
localzuk Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Proof it isn't unique: Just different colours.

mdench Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 How long before this is apples logo and sues Microsoft about having rights to the use of squares first?
Dos_Box Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Hmmm. I vote cloud based services, which is where lots of things are migrating these days. *Mental note to self to start the 'Things everyone got wrong on EduGeek' thread to include such favourites as 'The iPad - It's just a big iPod Touch' and 'The Cloud - It'll never happen'. There are a couple more as well once I dig them out
Arthur Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 It looks similar to the Microsoft Store logo. http://i.imgur.com/LuSmL.png The yellow colour would surely be for Windows Phone? http://i.imgur.com/5xZC5.jpg
sonofsanta Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Between that logo and the Chrome advert at the top of the page for me, I have to ask: when are we going to get over this [primary colours] + [sans-serif font in grey] phase?

There are a couple more as well once I dig them out Nah, people haven't said they won't happen. They've said things like 'until internet connections improve, and data security and integrity is better, the cloud won't happen'. For some, like some of the Aussie members, that might well mean 'never'. The iPad, its happening, but how long until everyone realises its a giant mistake?
gshaw Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Microsoft: we're a bit square Wonder how much they paid for that wonderful and thought provoking piece of design?
ZeroHour Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Yellow could be cloud/skype/azure or it could be Windows Phone 8 although I would have thought that would have been blue.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, recognises the wavey Microsoft flag. It is stylised and has a distinct look. 4 squares? Not unique, not special and not going to impress anyone. Ah yes, but when MS had the logo consultants in, one of their first questions was 'Your name is Windows - why are you a flag?' Redesigning the Windows Logo A logo should be instantly identifiable across a room. They (top companies, at least) care nothing for complexity, artistry - it's all about recognition, nothing else. Take the Orange logo - the work 'orange' in Helvetica in an orange box. Simple, but you can pick it out at half a mile. Of course, that's not to say that the new simple Windows logo is any good... In most cases, simple is good. http://speckyboy.com/2011/06/15/30-of-the-most-iconic-logos-and-brands/ When Steve Jobs was making his NeXT computer system, he had Paul Rand design the logo. He asked Rand for choices, but Rand said there will be no choice - but you will pay me $100,000 whether you use it or not. You could argue one hundred grand is a lot for a square, but Steve liked it. Creative Review - Rand v Jobs: when egos collide This is an engaging read, by the way, and details some of the design process that led to the NeXT logo. http://imprint.printmag.com/branding/paul-rand-steve-jobs/ Edited August 23, 2012 by jinnantonnixx
